Second Step Home Link-April/May 2019
Friendship Skills
During the months of April and May, elementary students will continue to learn about problem solving and begin to explore friendship skills. In morning announcements and school assemblies, students will be reminded to invite others to play, play in fair ways, take responsibility for mistakes by making amends, and how to handle name-calling assertively. These skills help students make and keep friends.
Second Step lessons specifically teach these friendship skills. You will be receiving Home Links describing why friendship skills are important and including fun activities to do with
your child to help him or her learn and practice the skills.
Please tell your child’s teacher or school counselor if you would like more suggestions about how to use the Problem-Solving Steps or how to build friendship skills at home.
Inviting to Play
Inviting other students to play is a caring thing to do. When we invite others to play, we will get to know them.
Playing Fairly and Making Amends
Being able to play fairly with others will help you make and keep friends. Sharing, trading, and taking turns are fair and fun ways to play together.
Everyone makes mistakes sometimes. When you hurt someone’s feelings, it’s important to take responsibility.
Handling Name-Calling
It’s not respectful to call people names that hurt their
feelings. If someone calls you a name, you can ignore the person or speak to him or her assertively. You can tell the person it’s not okay to call you names. If the person doesn’t stop calling you names, you should tell an adult. Saying kind words to others helps you make and keep friends!
