About PPD:
PPD is a very common depression that occurs after childbirth. Over 3 million cases are reported very year.
Is it serious?
Usually, the depression resolves after a few months, but if untreated, symptoms may last much longer. Those who do develop postpartum depression have an increased risk of developing major depression later on in life.
Symptoms include:
Psychological
Depression, anger, fear, guilt, inability to feel pleasure, feelings of hopelessness.
Physical
Fatigue, weight gain or weight loss, loss of appetite, restlessness.
Cognitive
Insomnia, lack of concentration, unwanted thoughts.
Behaviors include crying and irritability.
Treatment
Treatment includes different options and lifestyles:
Counseling, antidepressants, hormone therapy, support groups, and relaxation techniques can all help PPD.
