Complications to Mother
Anemia: Lower number of healthy red blood cells Symptoms-tired, weak, pale, out of breath Doctor checks iron levels throughout pregnancy Take iron and folic acid supplements Preeclampsia: High blood pressure problems with kidney and other organs Symptoms- high blood pressure, swelling of hands and face, too much protein in urine, stomach pain, dizzy, headaches, blurred vision. Induced labor Medicine to lower blood pressure, medicine to prevent seizures, and bed rest Tubal Pregnancy: Form of ectopic pregnancy possibility of being life threatening (uncommon now) fertilized egg develops in fallopian tube Symptoms-spotting of blood, sharp pains on lower abdomen Complications-bleeding of abdomen, invading blood vessels, massive bleeding
Complications to Baby
Group B Strep: Can get from mother Symptoms- breathing problems, heart and blood pressure instability, gastrointestinal and kidney problems, sepsis, pneumonia, meningitis Symptoms spotted within hours of delivery or later Babies can also have birth defects such as Down Syndrome, Structural and Metabolic Defects, and Heart Defects.
Ways to Prevent Complications
Eat healthy Iron and calcium supplements Stay physically and mentally fit. (Yoga helps) Take precautions when around an unhealthy or ill person(Could catch an infection and harm pregnancy) Make sure pets are healthy and clean. (handling these animals can lead to infections) Avoid stress (if the mother is stressed it could harm the baby) Don't drink (could to Fetal Alcohol Syndrome) Don't smoke (could harm the growth of the baby) Drinking or smoking during pregnancy could result in a miscarriage
Down Syndrome
A congenital disorder that comes from a chromosome defect. It causes intellectual impairment and physical abnormalities such as, short stature and a broad facial profile. It comes from an error within the chromosome 21, usually an extra copy. (trisomy-21)
Heart Defects
abnormality that is present in any part of the heart at birth. Some can have no symptoms some end up in heart failure
Structural and Metabolic Defects
Structural- A specific body part is missing or improperly formed. Metabolic- Involve inborn abnormalities of the body's chemistry and affect about one in every 3500 babies.
