Principal's Post
Dear Newport El Families,
It's hard to believe that we are only 2 weeks from the start of the school year. I hope that you have had a fun and rejuvenating summer! I was able to spend some time reflecting on last school year and recharging for the new year. I went to Chicago for the National Association of Elementary School Principals. It was a wonderful opportunity to network with other principals, continue my professional development, and get new ideas.
In this newsletter, you will find information about what school will look like this year and how to prepare for the first day of school.
I'm also excited to announce this year's school theme: Thriving Together! Inspired by Michele Borba's book, Thrivers: The Surprising Reasons Why Some Kids Struggle and Others Shine, we will work together to help our students thrive. Dr Borba's book explains how to foster the 7 traits that set thrivers apart. The traits are self-confidence, empathy, self-control, integrity, curiosity, perseverance and optimism. I know that with your partnership and support we will be thriving together in the 2021-2022 school year.
As the first day of school approaches, I will continue to send information with any updates and changes. We've learned over the last 18 months to adapt as the CDC and CDHP responds to Covid-19.
Keep being awesome!

Staffing News and Class Placements
Staffing News:
The make-up of our team is changing a bit. We are fortunate to have Ms Mathers and Mr Nguyen return to our teaching team after teaching at Cloud Campus last year. Mrs Reagan retired at the end of last year, and Mrs Saba has accepted an opportunity at another NMUSD school. I will miss them both and their incredible contributions to the Newport El team.
Due to these staffing changes, some teachers will be changing grade levels. Newport El is lucky to have highly-qualified teachers who can excel at teaching any grade level. We put great care in assigning students to classrooms in an effort to set them up for success. We consider several factors including learning/teaching style, academic performance, behavior, and peer relationships. We cannot accommodate requests for certain teachers.
While you may be able to begin seeing teacher names through various online programs we use, class placements are not finalized until Friday, August 20th after 5pm. Please understand we are making adjustments to class placements as enrollment continues through the end of summer.
