Visit to the Drone Lab - by Teaghan Rockenstire, P-TECH Student
On November 14, 2019, P-TECH 10th grade students took a trip to the Drone Lab at the University of Albany. We learned about 3D printers and how some parts of the printer are actually made of 3D printed parts. We also learned about the Cricut Maker and laser cutter. These tools are used in design and fabrication.
During our visit, they talked to us about UAlbany's eSports program. eSports are online video games like Fortnite. The eSports program travels to play in gaming competitions. They compete in the following games: Overwatch, League of Legends, Fortnite, Rocket League, Madden, FIFA, and Super Smash Bros. To join the eSport program you must be a fully enrolled student at UAlbany and you must maintain certain grades to stay on the team.
All students, with whatever degree they are going to get, can be on the team. The school treats eSports like sports such as football. They have top technology. They have12 High Performance Alienware Computers, Intel i9 9900, Graphics Card: NVIDIA(R) GeForce RTX(TM) 2080 Ti 11GB GDDR6, Storage: Solid state hard drives, RAM: 32 GB RAM,25 in. Alienware Monitors, 240Hz refresh rate and 1-ms response time, 6 Nintendo Switch Consoles, Alienware Pro Gaming Keyboards, Alienware Advanced Gaming Mice, Xbox One Controllers, and Turtle Beach Atlas One Gaming Headsets.
We then made our way down to the drone lab. In the drone lab they let us pilot the drones and drive bots. The drones and bots are controlled by phones on an app. They taught us about how they are controlled and how they use the drones to do search and rescues.
We are truly thankful that we were able to go and learn about something so interesting. This opportunity gave us a chance to see what careers we may be able to go into after finishing PTECH.
