End of Summer Newsletter 2022
"Joy is the evidence of inner growth."

THANK YOU FOR A GREAT SUMMER CAMP 2022 AT ATHENA!
What a fun (but HOT) summer we’ve had at Camp Athena 2022!
Families, thank you for sharing your precious little ones with us this summer for games, water play, arts, crafts, learning, dancing, gardening, and adventure this summer!
We want to thank our incredible summer camp teachers and volunteers for all their hard work, creativity, imagination, joy, and love! Camp has run smoothly, thanks to all of your hard work and dedication to these children and families. Congratulations to all of you who successfully navigated new roles, new students, new teams, or new classrooms–you did a beautiful job! And what fun to have three of our Athena alumni back as camp volunteers: Miles Wyatt, Sophia Hooker, and Janie Pippin! Amazing and lovely to see you all so grown up. We are grateful for your help this summer and hope you come back! We are also proud to welcome all of our newest staff members who received lots of great training this summer alongside our veteran guides, learning the Athena way! Welcome to the team!
Please visit the Faculty and Staff Page of our website to meet all of our newest staff members as we welcome them into our community.
For those of you who are moving on from Athena, we bid you farewell and hope to see you back on campus SOON for an in-person(!) community event or festival! We plan to bring back our fall Cultural Fest potluck family festival and hope to see all of you there! Stay tuned to these newsletters and our website for Athena happenings.
For those of you returning next school year, we can’t wait to see you back on campus in August! The teachers return August 1st to start preparing for the 2022-2023 school year! Stay tuned to your email for Back to School details and events.
Have a great rest of your summer!!!
With Love,
Lisl and Your Admin Team
An Important Reminder from the Garden Fairy
Playing outdoors is a great summer activity, but it's also important to be mindful about protection from the sun's harmful exposure, so...
Let's talk about Sunscreen!
Have you thought about how to store sunscreen? Make sure sunscreen is kept out of direct sunlight. The heat degrades the sunscreen's active ingredients so store your bottles or cans inside or in the shade.
Aerosol cans have a temperature at which they can be stored safely. Check the label for recommended storage temperature as cans under pressure can explode.
Please dispose of sunscreen containers properly. Check cans for recycling code and clean before disposal.
High UV exposure and poor air quality make it dangerous for children to be outside for an extended period of time. Check your local weather or weather app for the UV and Air Quality Index before planning a trip outside.
I hope our Athena Families are having a great Summer! Can't wait to see you in the Fall!
Onward!

Discussion about Juneteenth with Kimberly
Kimberly Love, our Primary Program Lead, held special Juneteenth circle-times in the three Primary Camp Classrooms in mid-June. Kimberly used the new book by Dorena Williamson, “The Story of Juneteenth” to guide the conversation. To put the concept of enslavement into terms that the Primary children could understand, Kimberly asked the children a series of curiosity questions such as:
-When you grow up, what kind of work do you want to do? What job will you pick?
-When you go to work all day and help the business, should you get some pay? What is pay?
-What can you do with some money?
-Who tells your family where to live?
-Should one person ever make another person move from their home?
The children understand that it is not fair for anyone to be forced from their chosen home, separated from the people they love, and made to work at a job they don’t want for no money.
The children understand that people are born free, and that freedom means choices. The children understand that all people deserve to live with those they love, to do work that they chose to do, and to earn a living doing it. The children are ready for the truth and we talk about it in an age-appropriate way.
