NYS TESTING FOR GRADES 3-8 IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS
From April 19th-April 26th, DeSales will be administering the New York State Assessment in English Language Arts to all students in grades 3-8. This year students will be taking the ELA exam on computers or iPads rather than the paper booklets. As was the case for the past few years, opting out will not take place for the following reasons:
- The tests help us to help your children. The Lockport City School District looks at students’ state test scores as a factor in determining eligibility for special education services.
- We use the data from these tests to guide our curriculum.
- Student performance on these tests does not affect their report card grades.
- It is important to know how DeSales compares with other private and public schools in our area and across the state.
Below are some test taking tips to help your child do his or her best:
The night before:
- Help your child get to bed on time. Research shows that well-rested students perform better on assessments.
- Keep your routine as normal as possible. Upsetting natural routines can add to anxiety and concern.
- Mention the test to show you're interested and encourage them to do their best.
- Plan ahead to avoid conflicts on the morning of test days.
The morning of the test:
- Get up early to avoid rushing. Be sure your child is at school on time.
- Prepare a healthy, filling breakfast.
- Acknowledge that tests can be tricky and are designed so no one will know every single answer. So, no need to be concerned if you are faced with a problem you don't know how to solve. Explain that doing your best is what counts.
After the test:
- Talk to your child about their feelings about the test, make sure to acknowledge the effort they put in.
- Praise them for their hard work!
Thanks for your cooperation in helping us ensure your child is receiving the best education we can provide.

New Outdoor Space at DeSales
Construction began a few days ago on a new outdoor classroom and gathering space for our Knights!
The area will feature a beautiful concrete pad with Amish crafted benches and picnic tables for seating. The benches, tables and a statue are being made from the reclaimed wood of Ash trees that were taken down from the DeSales property this last fall (they were dead trees that need to be removed). A statue of the Good Shepherd has been carefully crafted for DeSales in a small town in Italy in a shop that also does work for the Vatican.
Every detail has been thoughtfully put together to make this space special for our students, faculty, alumni and guests.
This generous improvement was made possible by DeSales alumna, Mrs. Patricia Nemi McCabe, ‘73. A gift from one Knight to another. Thank you!
Once a Knight, Always a Knight!
