What is Ariel?

Ariel is one of Uranus's 27 moons. It was named after a character in a poem by the English writer Alexander Pope. It is the brightest of all of Uranus's 27 moons. It orbits the planet of Uranus once every 2 1/2 days. It is about the same size as one of the moons of Uranus called Umbriel. This puts its diameter at 720 miles.

What does it look like?

Ariel is a very bright moon as described in the text above. These bright spots are the result of the rims of some of its small craters. It's surface is covered with huge canyons and broad curving valleys.Water of ice once may have covered it's surface. Also it's apperence may be a result of meteorite hits.

How far away is it?

The moon Ariel is about 118,700 miles away from it's home planet of Uranus. That is also a distance that equals 191,029.133 kilometers. The moon Ariel is farther out than the moon of Uranus known as Miranda.
