Holy Cross Catholic School Papatoetoe

Our Vision: Learning and Growing in Christ

Dear Parents and Caregivers

Kia Ora Koutou Katoa, Talofa Lava, Malo e Lelei, Ni Sa Bula Vinaka, Kia Orana, Hola como Estas, Marhaba, Greetings to you all.
Big picture

On Sunday, 14th August, the Feast of Our Lady's Assumption was celebrated at St Mary of the Angels Church, Wellington. The bishops of Aotearoa/New Zealand declared St Mary's as the National Shrine of Our Lady and the beautiful icon of Our Lady, entitled Te Ara Maria (Mary's way), is to be permanently housed in the church. This icon has been travelling the country for a year but if you travel to Wellington do include St Mary's as a place of pilgrimage. The official celebration of the Assumption is historically a Holy Day of Obligation on 15th August and Fr Andrew has generously offered to do an extra Mass on Monday so that the school community can come together to celebrate our holy Mother Mary.

Catholic Character Award

Congratulations to Rhylee-Jay Masoe who received the Catholic Character Award this week.

Message from the Principal

Dear Parents

Last week we welcomed the finer weather which enabled our students to get outside during the breaks even though it was a bit colder. We are grateful for the jackets supplied by Kids Can as the majority of our children now have warm clothing to wear on these colder days. Please ensure you have clearly named your child’s jackets as they are all the same and when misplaced can't be returned easily to the owner.

Today we celebrated the Feast of the Assumption with a Mass at midday. Throughout Aotearoa the Feast Day was celebrated yesterday as recommended by the New Zealand Bishops but as it is a major Feast Day and as Mary is the Patron Saint of Aotearoa we chose to celebrate this special day with our school community today.

This week we will also miss the presence of both Father Andrew and Father Albert who will be meeting with Bishop Steve and all the clergy of the Auckland Diocese up at Waitangi.

Arohanui.

Scholastic Book Club Orders

The children have received the latest catalogue and we are encouraging all parents to use the online ordering system and then the books will be delivered to the school.

The last day for all orders is Friday 26 August so you will get your books before the holidays.

https://mybookclub.scholastic.co.nz/Parent.aspx

  • Simply grab your Book Club Catalogue

  • Register your details

  • Select your school and your child's class

  • Add your child's first name & last initial (so the school knows who the book is for)

  • Enter the item number from the Book Club catalogue

  • All orders are sent directly to the school for submission to Scholastic. Books will still be delivered to your child's classroom if you order by the close date

  • Afterwards, there's no need to return paper order forms or payment receipt details back to your school!

Enrolments for 2023

Please ensure you or any of your whanau or friends who have children turning five next year have completed and submitted an enrolment as we are reviewing our Catholic Waiting List and finalising our roll by the end of this month. There are a few places available at some levels in the school but enrolments need to be submitted as soon as possible.

Attendance and Lateness

Whilst we fully understand sickness and COVID is unavoidable and prevents children from attending school but we are concerned about the children with spasmodic attendance.

We now have an Engagement in Schools Worker who has been employed to assist with those students who have unexplained erratic attendance. Our aim and the aim of the Government is to strive for 95% attendance across our schools.

Attendance is also affected if you are regularly late to school or leave early. Please set your children up with very good self-management skills starting with getting to school on time and learning to be punctual, remind them that school starts at 8.45am.

Parents if you are collecting your children early from the School Office, please do not be offended if you are asked for the reason that you are collecting your child early. We are required to enter attendance details in our Student Management System.

Mathex Competition

This Tuesday our three teams will compete in the Mathex Competition at Papatoetoe Central School. We wish all our teams the very best and a special thanks to Mrs Diane Siluuga for preparing the teams for this event.

Business Day

On Wednesday 18 August our Year 7 & 8 students will hold their Market Day and there will be a range of items for sale which students may purchase. There will be playdough, bath bombs, scrunchies, bracelets, pencil cases, stress balls etc and prices will range from $1.50 to $5.00 so please send your children to school with some money so they are able to support this day. Please try to send small change as the girls will only have limited change. This is an in-school event only.

Students Leaving

Please ensure you have enrolled your Year 8 daughters and Year 6 sons into a college or intermediate school for 2023. Many of the colleges have closing dates and it is necessary that you have submitted an application to enrol for 2023.

If any other families are planning on moving to other schools, other areas or overseas please inform Susan Bell by email at office@hcsp.nz or telephone her on 09 2788224

School Pedestrian Crossings

After what seems a very long time our new crossings are operational from today. You will notice we have permanent crossing signs locked in place and the road patrol girls no longer have to carry the signs in and out everyday. The two crossings will be manned by our girls and a staff member everyday from 8.20am till 8.45am and again in the afternoon from 2.50pm - 3.05pm.

Please note we will not be manning the new crossing going up at St George Street towards the Great South Road. Our children can access the other two crossings to get into our school.

Parking Outside School

Last week we received several complaints about parents, caregivers and whanau parking on the grass verges in Fairview Rd and blocking the footpaths. It is both illegal and inconsiderate to park on the grass verges as now we have some very dug up muddy areas. Please do not park on the grass verges. Drivers also need to show some courtesy when parking in the hall car park as it causes unnecessary congestion if people stop in the middle when no car parks are available.

Finally please refer to your road rules. It is illegal to stop on broken yellow lines at any time. Outside our school gate, before and after the pedestrian crossing, there are broken yellow lines where no car should stop. Cars may move forward onto the bus stop but you do this at your own risk. You should not leave your car and be ready to move should a bus approach the bus stop.

Bingo Evening

Our PTFA Bingo night will be held on Friday, 26 August. All the details remain the same, so please see our flyers around the school. Tickets are available for $20.00 each at the school office. Please get your tickets as they are selling fast and numbers are limited.

The Tri Annual Board of Trustees Elections

We have received eight nominations for our School Board of Trustees and five Parent Representatives need to be appointed.

All of our nominees have provided a brief statement about themselves so you can learn a little about them to assist you when you are completing your votes.

All voting papers were posted on Sunday 7 August and you have until 7 September to vote and return the papers to school. Any postal votes will be accepted if received within five days after the election.

Completed voting papers can be placed in a sealed box in the school office if you are worried about posting your votes.

Raffle Tickets

There has been a huge demand for our raffle tickets so if you are unable to sell them all please return them by Friday 19 August as other families are requesting extra tickets to sell. We would be really delighted if all tickets were sold and returned before the end of Term 3.

Interviews

Thank you to all the parents who took advantage of the opportunity to meet with their child’s teacher for a Parent/Teacher and Student interview. We believe we have now met with 95% of our whanau but if anyone still wishes to meet with any teachers please email them directly.

Congratulations!!

Congratulations to Fili Setima Autagavaia who has been awarded a Scholarship for King’s Preparatory School and to Jennifer Tran who has been awarded a scholarship for Baradene College for 2023.
