General News!
Week of November 9-13:
Welcome to an interesting week! In case you are not aware, we will only have four days of classes this week. Wednesday there will be "NO SCHOOL" in observance of Veteran's Day. Please try to help your students stay focused during their day off if possible, to help them get right back in the groove on Thursday.
We will have WOW?ZAP this Thursday. Permission slips should come home with your student tomorrow afternoon if they have been invited, or feel they could use the extra support.Remember, if your student is absent during a school day, please encourage them to stay after for WOW/ZAP to get caught up on any and all missing classroom assignments. It is their responsibility to ask for one of these forms if they have not been invited by one of their teachers.
Thanks to all of you who helped us out last week by getting the forms that were sent home signed and back to us. We appreciate your efforts in helping us get these turned in! If you still have a form at home, please sign it and return it to school as soon as possible. Thanks!
Upcoming Dates to Remember: NO SCHOOL (Veteran's Day Holiday) Wednesday, Nov.11th,Next WOW/ZAP Thursday, Nov. 12th, Progress Reports Home Wednesday, November 18th...Have a wonderful week!

We are off and running with Emma in Behind Rebel Lines, she has already fooled the Union Army, and has taken on another new identity as she heads into the Confederate camp.
The students will continue reading and making their annotations independently for this novel. The chapters are fairly short, and we are reading approximately one chapter a day. We have just taken our first reading comprehension quiz on chapters #1-5, and the grades have been entered. If your child's score is not where it should be, you may consider asking them to bring a book home to re-read their daily chapter with you. They can use this time for fluency practice as well as a great review of the days events. Adequate time is being provided in class for this to happen, but if your child is falling behind, or needs to work on their reading/annotations at home, they may check a book out from me overnight at the end of the school day. All books must be returned daily. They also have the option of coming in before school to finish things up. Their annotation sheet is available on their Google drive, so please ask them how they are coming with this, and why they have selected some of the things they have. Annotation sheets will be checked and graded this week for chapters # 1-6.
New root word terms were given out last week on "Rootie Tootit Thursday". These terms contain the roots: “aqua”, “aqui”, “geo”, “hydr”, “mar”, “mer”, and “terr”. A Study Stack link can be found in Google Classroom to give students an opportunity to study.
Reminder... your student should be reading something 20-30 minutes each night.

This Week in Mathematics:
Hello parents. We have 2 Mondays this week and 2 Fridays… We will be continuing our study of transformations. This week we will finish up translations with a quiz on Thursday. We will begin reflections on Tuesday while continuing review of translations. Please expect homework Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday night. I will also be giving students a project on Friday. I think it is one the students will enjoy, and will have a lot of student choice as to what they do. We will work on the project in class on Friday and students will be able to work on it if they finish their classwork during class time. The project will be due on Friday, November 20th. This gives them a weekend, and a full week of school to come in early for help, to get the project looked at to make sure they are on the right track, or use any materials they may not have at home. Students will be given the usual 2 day grace period, which in this case will actually give them an ENTIRE week since it will be over Thanksgiving Break. If the project is not turned in by Tuesday, December 1st, the student will receive a zero and not have an opportunity to turn it in late unless there are unavoidable circumstances for an individual child. If you have any questions, please feel free to email. Looking forward to a good week.

Social Studies- Mr. Salser
I am changing my policy for make-up tests and quizzes. I will no longer allow students to make-up test and quizzes after failing them the first time around. If a student wishes to improve a failed test or quiz they will be able to take an alternative assignment for 75% of the total value of the test or quiz. For example, if a student completes the alternative assignment and scores a 100, then this will improve their failed test or quiz grade to a 75. I feel this change is needed because more and more students are choosing not to study for the test or quiz and then retake it later after they have gotten a feel for what was on the test. The students have more than enough time to study for a test (7 calendar days with a study guide) and quiz (2-3 days for 4 words). My goal is to get students to meet deadlines and to be prepared the first time for tests and quizzes.
This week we will begin looking into the economic and agricultural changes associated with Georgia after the American Revolution. We will discuss the impact of the cotton gin on Georgia, how Georgia became dependent on cotton, and the ever increasing demand for slaves on the cotton plantations. We will discuss the broadening schism between the wealthy and the poor, the development of the railroads in Georgia, and the increasing population of Georgia as it expands westward through central and western Georgia.
