Tardy to School/Class Procedure
Our Tardy to School/Class Procedure was reviewed with our students. The goal of our procedure is to maximize instructional time for our students. When they are late to class, they often miss important information that is shared during class. Students may lose the following privileges if they accumulate four tardies to school and any individual class. A call to alert the parent will occur before privileges are taken away.
Extracurricular Privileges
Parking Privileges
Dance Privileges
PBIS Incentives
Hallway Privileges
September is Attendance Awareness month and we will be consistently recognizing our students who are on time and ready for class. Attendance is part of our PBIS program. Our PBIS Incentive is scheduled for September 23. We will have an obstacle course, bounce house and a jousting pit for students to enjoy. We want all of our students to be able to attend.
Excused tardies will be excused just like an excused absence. They will not count against your child in regards to the number of tardies to school. We will be using the same guidelines for excused absences.
Counseling Corner!
Senior Parent Information Night
The Counseling Office would like to welcome parents of seniors to an informational meeting in the main cafeteria on Wednesday, September 21 at 6pm (Spanish translation available).
The discussion will revolve around graduation requirements, senior year checklist items (including cap and gown ordering), and what you need to know in regards to applying to 4 or 2 year schools, WorkForce programs, and enlisting in the military.
PSAT/NMSQT
Dear Parent/Guardian,
We are excited to offer the opportunity for a limited number of Junior students to take the Preliminary Scholastic Aptitude Test/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT) on Wednesday, October 12, 2022 at 8:20am at John Handley High School.
All Juniors may choose to register for this test, with a limit of 100 students. Winchester Public Schools will cover the costs for ALL students. The PSAT exam is a great way to practice for the SAT exam and also a way to determine best placement for courses for the next academic year, including AP classes. Taking the PSAT/NMSQT as a Junior is a requirement to be considered for the National Merit Scholarship Program.
The first 100 JUNIORS to complete this form will be registered for the PSAT: https://forms.gle/6uwXL1GDaxb7WZ3m8
Mid-Quarter Review
It's hard to believe, but we are now approaching the interim of the first 9 week grading period. Please continue to monitor your child’s progress in Power School and on Canvas. If you need assistance with your login for either of these sites please let us know.
The first quarter ends on Thursday, October 13, with report cards being mailed the following week.
Our first Parent/Student/Teacher Conference Night will be held on Thursday, September 29.
Careers in Teacher Education event
Shepherd University's Educator Preparation Program is ExCITEd! to once again host our Careers in Teacher Education event for high school students [Grades 9 to 12] who are interested in exploring majors in elementary or secondary education.
When and Where:
Friday, October 28
8:30-2:30pm
Shepherd University
This one-day event involves opportunities for your student to receive information about Application, Admissions and Registration, and Residence Life at Shepherd. More importantly, it gives potential future educators a chance to participate in education classes, meet with our specialization coordinators, spend time with current teacher candidates, and learn important tips from those candidates about what to expect as new college students and how to be successful in an educator preparation program like that at Shepherd.
If your student is interested in attending, please have them fill out the form below. If there is enough interest, JHHS may be able to provide transportation.
Youth Scholarships!
The VFW is dedicated to promoting patriotism and investing in our future generation. If you are a democracy-loving high school student interested in a $35,000 college scholarship or a patriotic middle school student interested in winning $5,000, these scholarships may be for you.
Voice of Democracy
Established in 1947, our Voice of Democracy audio-essay program provides high school students with the unique opportunity to express themselves in regards to a democratic and patriotic-themed recorded essay. Each year, nearly 25,000 9-12 grade students from across the country enter to win their share of more than $2 million in educational scholarships and incentives awarded through the program.
The national first place winner receives a $35,000 scholarship paid directly to the recipient’s American university, college or vocational/technical school. A complete list of other national scholarships range from $1,000-$21,000, and the first place winner from each VFW Department (state) wins at least a scholarship of $1,000.
Before submitting your essay, read the rules and eligibility requirements, and find your sponsoring local VFW Post as applications must be turned in by midnight, Oct. 31. Download and complete the 2022-2023 Voice of Democracy entry form here.
Virginia General Assembly House and Senate Page Program
The Senate Page Program is a dynamic, engaging and educational experience that honors and preserves the tradition of service to the legislature. Senate Pages have served the upper chamber of the legislature since at least 1850.
The experience today is designed to provide a foundation of knowledge for the next generation of administrators, managers, elected-officials and civic leaders. Structured similar to a college preparatory program, organized learning activities compliment the day-to-day duties of all Senate Pages. Members of each class are expected to fully participate in all program components with a positive, respectful, and can-do attitude. Failure to do so will result in dismissal.
The mission of the Senate Page Program is to facilitate a structured environment in which young Virginians accept responsibility and accountability, develop professional characteristics through strict standards of conduct and engage in the legislative process through work, observation and discussion.
Applicants seeking admission must be 13 or 14 years of age on the first day of session (second Wednesday in January) and a resident of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The deadline to apply is 5:00 p.m. Monday, October 17, 2022. Applications that are postmarked October 17 will be considered on time; however, make every attempt to avoid a last-minute submission.

Handley Parking Permit
Students are permitted to park on school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. If you are going to be driving to school for the 2022 -2023 school year and parking in the Handley parking lot, you must obtain a parking permit. Below you will find instructions on how to register your vehicle and obtain a parking permit.
Step one - Visit the Handley web page and locate the High School Student Parking Pass Application (Spanish here)
If you do not have access to the internet, you may come into school and use a library computer or pick up a copy of the parking application in the main office
Step two - Print off and complete the High School Student Parking Pass Application (Spanish here) with all the needed information.
Step three - Bring the completed parking application to school on July 28 or anytime after during business hours.
See the school treasurer to pay the $25 parking fee or parking permits may be purchased through School Cash online using credit cards. The necessary registration form will still need to be completed online prior to picking up the parking permit hang tag. Once the registration is completed and credit card payment is made, bring your receipt to the General Office to pick up the hang tag.
Take the receipt and complete parking application to the main office and one of the administrative assistants will assign you a parking space and give you a parking permit.
Step four - Hang the parking permit from your rear view mirror.
The parking permit must be visible.
The parking permit will have a number on it. That number is your assigned spot for the year.
You may only park in your assigned spot during school hours. If you fail to park in your spot, break any parking lot rules, and/or chronically late to school you may lose your privilege to park in the lot and anywhere on school property.
