From the Library
There has been a lot a library books that have been damaged by water from water bottles.
Here is a way that you and your child can help that not to happen:
Remind them not to put water bottles in their backpacks.
Put library books in a gallon size freezer bag.
Please remember that we do ask that the damage books be paid for so that they can be replaced.
News from Mrs. Leeper
Red Ribbons, Cans, Orange Shirts, Oh My!
I wanted to give you a heads up that October 21-25 is a busy week!
October 21 is the Canned Food Drive Kick-off. The collection goes through November 8th. We will be collecting cans for the Christian Care Center in Wylie. As a campus we want our students to understand the meaning and actions involved with Caring and Giving. This is the most important reason that we have this food drive, but to add a little competition, there is a contest among all the Wylie Elementary Schools. Last year, we won the trophy for “Best Packed” boxes. J (We have actual packing rules!) With that being said, LET THE CAN COLLECTING BEGIN! .
October 23 is Unity Day! The purpose of Unity Day is to spend some intentional time talking about how when we pay attention to others, stand up for what is right, and show kindness, everyone benefits. Creating a united campus where students feel safe and connected is a top priority, and just like with anything else, we want to be sure to teach the kids about how to do that. Remember, people are able to order a Unity Day shirt (optional!) The deadline to order a shirt is on Sunday, Oct. 13. Here is the link again: https://wisd-unityday19.itemorder.com/sale?read_message=true Remember, any orange shirt works just fine!
October 21-25 is Red Ribbon Week! The purpose of RRW is to help influence students to make positive, healthy choices when it comes to what they put in their bodies. In other words, staying away from drugs, nicotine, and alcohol. See the attached dress-up schedule for this week. The dress-up days are also attached to the newsletter and are posted on the PTA FB page, Akin’s FB, and Twitter.

HPISD
HPISD Parent Education Committee (PEC) and Highland Park United Methodist Church (HPUMC) are excited to bring Screenagers, Next Chapter to our community at 7pm on Monday, October 21st in HPUMC’s Wesley Hall. In this second installment of the documentary series, filmmaker and physician, Dr. Delany Ruston Filmmaker takes the conversation around screens and teens to the next level. She examines the science behind teen’s emotional challenges, the interplay of social media, and most importantly, what can be done in our schools and homes to help them build crucial skills to navigate stress, anxiety and depression in our digital age.
In this film, we follow Delaney as she finds herself at a loss on how to help her own teens as they struggle with their emotional wellbeing. She sets out to understand these challenges in our current screen-filled society, and how we, as parents and educators, can empower teens to overcome mental health challenges and build emotional agility, communication savvy, and stress resilience. We witness Delaney as she finds her way from ineffective parenting to much-improved strategies. We will also follow other personal stories of families from an array of backgrounds with a spectrum of emotional challenges. We will see approaches in schools that provide strategies relevant beyond the classroom setting. Interwoven into the stories are surprising insights from brain researchers, psychologists, and thought leaders that reveal evidence-based ways to support mental wellness among our youth.
