Kestrel's Scholar of the Week - Celebrating scholars who SOAR above and beyond!
Grade Level News
First Grade: This week scholars have been working on learning about the author’s purpose through our informational text story entitled “At Home In The Ocean”. Scholars have also been practicing with the digraph “th”. In math students have been working on strengthening addition strategies such as counting on, doubles, and doubles plus one.
ELA: RI.3.3 Describe the relationship between a series of historical events, scientific ideas or concepts, or steps in technical procedures in a text, using language that pertains to time, sequence, and cause/effect.
Math: NC.3.OA.1 Represent and solve problems involving multiplication.
Fourth Grade:
Math: We will be finishing up long division and testing on the chapter on our first day back from Thanksgiving Break. Next up will be a chapter on multiplies, factors, and patterns. Have a wonderful, safe, and restful Thanksgiving Break!
Social Studies: This week scholars were introduced to vocabulary related to our next unit on the First People of North Carolina. In the upcoming weeks, we will continue to explore the tribes of North Carolina to find out more about their past customs and traditions prior to the arrival of European settlers.
Fifth Grade:
Math: We will be finishing up decimal multiplication and testing on the chapter on our first day back from Thanksgiving Break. Next up will be dividing decimals. Have a wonderful, safe, and restful Thanksgiving Break!
Social Studies: This week scholars were introduced to vocabulary related to our next unit on the Age of Exploration. In the upcoming weeks, we will continue to explore further the effects of contact between the Old World and the New World.
Sixth Grade:
Social Studies: We are wrapping up our unit on the Fertile Crescent by taking a look at the contributions of the Phoenicians, which include the origin of the western alphabet, the first sea trading system, and purple dye. We are also beginning our next unit which covers ancient Egypt. We’ll start the unit with Egypt’s geography with a specific focus on the importance of the Nile River.
Science: We are working on Energy Conservation and Transfer.
Math: We are doing measurement conversions. We will have a Show What You Know on Friday. Next week in math will be a review of the Rates and Ratio Unit (everything we’ve learned so far). After Break, we will learn Percentages and then have our Unit 2 Test!
ELA: This week we started reading the story There Will Come Soft Rains, by Ray Bradbury. The story focuses on what could have happened to humankind during the chaos of World War II if nuclear weapons wiped out our existence. Additionally, were analyzing the usage of figurative language in literature, and learning to stop and decode unknown words while reading.
Parent Tip: You can help your scholar by playing the video game Orpheus The Lyrical with them, and discussing how countries have used nuclear weapons in the past.
Science: We are working on our unit on Energy and Energy Transformations.
Eighth Grade:
Mathematics: For 8th-grade Math, we are working on functions and linear functions. We will be on this topic till the end of the year. For Math 1 we just rounded up exponents with a quiz and we will be introducing the Pythagorean Theorem.
ELA: We have embarked upon Collection 3: The Move Toward Freedom. We will be solidifying our skills of identifying the theme and central ideas of a text as well as analyzing dialogue and making connections to other texts.
Dance
Both elementary and middle school dance scholars have been working hard on their preparation for the Winter Arts Performance. The show will be filled with plenty of creative props made by hand and songs filled with Disney fairytales. The performance will be held on December 8th, 2022 at 5:30pm(K-2)/6:30pm(3-5). We hope to see you all there!

Winter Wishes
Winter Wishes: The last day to sign up to request assistance with holiday gifts or winter clothing through our Winter Wishes program is this Friday, November 18. High School Planning
There will be a Parent Information Night on Tuesday, December 6, 2022, from 6:30-8 pm. This meeting will help parents understand the high school transition process, including the timelines, deadlines, and important tasks that must be completed. We will also discuss the various high school options and make a tentative four-year plan for high school courses. The meeting will be held virtually and recorded, however, it is always best to attend live so that you can ask any questions you may have. You can join the virtual meeting using the link below. Between now and then, please be sure you are checking Class Dojo regularly as any information we receive regarding high school open houses or applications will be posted there.
