Summer at the Library
A quick update on summer at the library:
Storytimes in the parks start on June 1. We will have two Family Storytimes (geared to 2-5-yr-olds but still fun for older) per week through June and July, one on Tuesdays with Catherine at 10:00 a.m. in Central Park; one on Thursdays with me at 10:00 a.m. in Way Park. Once outdoor Books & Stars performances start up (schedule: https://guides.mynpl.org/booksandstars), we will have 5:30 Wednesday evening storytimes at performance locations before each performance.
Summer Challenge—formerly the Summer Reading Program—for kids prek-teen-- begins registration on June 7. The kids’ information page is here: https://guides.mynpl.org/summer/challenge (or under the Kids drop-down menu on the library’s main page at mynpl.org) It has been posted to the library’s Facebook page today and I’d appreciate any sharing of that post you’re willing to do as individuals or as representatives of your organizations!
Summer Challenge was entirely virtual last year, and enabled us to seamlessly move away from the trinket-like prizes we’ve been wanting to move from for some time while also supporting Northfield businesses. Prizes will continue the same way this year: weekly drawings for $15 gift cards to Content—one entry for every five challenges a child completes. We will also be drawing a Reader of the Week from this pool—please see the web page for more info about this. We will share a photo and some questions with each Reader of the Week on the library’s Facebook, and the mayor has also agreed to share them on hers. Please feel free to share them on yours when the time comes! I hope that both of these incentives and the social sharing will be enough to keep kids interested over the course of the program. (Readers of the Week will also get to keep a bilingual yard sign in their yards for that week—or a poster to post in their window or on their door and keep if they don’t have a yard)
To encourage signup and even the barest bit of participation: kids who turn in just FIVE challenges—their first five—are also entered into a Grand Prize drawing that will be done the first week of August. The Grand Prize will contain gifts cards from a variety of local businesses—some donated by the businesses, some purchased by the Friends—as well as some other cool treats like astronaut ice cream. Like last year, about 2/3 of the challenges will be reading-related; 1/3 other mental and physically
Linked above are the trifold brochures currently available at the library in English and Spanish that include the Books & Stars schedule and info about Summer Challenge signup and kids’ programs. These went into 1200 (I think?) bags at the Home & Garden Show this past weekend. I have not yet queried principals as to whether printed copies can go home in report cards—this is something we’ve done in the past—or (ideally) the pdf could be attached, images of the pdf could be pasted into the body of emails, or the info could be linked in principals’ weekly email newsletters to families. After printing so many for Home & Garden, our printing budget has taken a hit! I plan to send that email tomorrow. If anyone has any other thoughts about how to get these out there, let me know!
Please let me know if you have questions or suggestions.
Thanks and best,
Emily
