ESOL stands for English to Speakers of Other Languages. Students at Symmes this year were born in 27 different countries. These countries are displayed on the map in the main hallway. Children come here speaking many, many different languages! Our ESOL teachers use a language assessment to determine who is fluent in English, and who needs extra help learning English. This year, we have 91 students learning English at Symmes in kindergarten through fourth grade. English Learners acquire language all day, everywhere they go - in their classes, at specials, at recess and on the bus. In ESOL class, our teachers work with small groups of children to help them grow their vocabulary, grammar structures, and literacy skills. Teachers use pictures, gestures, books, speaking games, and sometimes Google translate to help students understand. Children are often quiet and shy at first, but within the first year they are able to have English conversations with friends. After about 2-3 years in US schools, many children are able to fully participate in grade level curriculum as much as their English speaking peers (although it could take longer). We have three ESOL teachers at Symmes: Mrs. Katie Dostal, Mrs. Kendra Simpson, and Ms. Sara Petticrew. They love helping them learn English, sharing unique aspects of our culture, and learning from them about their home culture and language!

Hearing and Vision Screenings

All students new to Sycamore, all kindergarten, all first grade students and all third grade students will have their vision and hearing screening next week, Monday through Wednesday. The screenings are done by our nurse, Julie Ferron.

We are getting so excited for our annual Fall Costume Parade! The parade is Monday, Oct. 31 and will begin at 2:30. All children and staff are invited to dress in a costume and join in the fun. Weather permitting, we will parade along the walking track on the side of the building. Parents and friends are invited to bring your cameras and watch the parade on the track. If the weather is bad, we will parade through the gym and MPR and invite parents into those rooms. We ask that NO SCARY costumes are worn and no weapons!

Thanks to the PTO, COSI (the Center of Science and Industry) is coming to Symmes! This year COSI is bringing "Astonding Astonomy" on Tuesday, Nov. 1. The day will begin with a 45 minute interactive assembly introducing the students to our solar system, how scientists explore the universe and why the Earth is the perfect place to call home. this fun, educational assemble is followed by hands-on learning activities during which the students will explore the unique characteristics of our solar system, the sun, comets, and why earth is the only planet that can maintain human life. If you have not signed up to help and would like to, please contact Megan Boni at or 614-432-0287.
