The Parent Coordination Network is committed to ensuring that parents of students with disabilities receive accurate and timely information to assist in making informed choices in their children's education.

Webinar Series: Building Stronger School-Family Partnerships

The Parent Coordination Network and the Texas Education Agency, in collaboration with the Right Question Institute, present the Webinar Series: Building Stronger School-Family Partnerships.


Nationally acclaimed speakers, Luz Santana, Co-Director & Author and Siyi Chu, Project Coordinator with the Right Question Institute, will help participants understand how The Right Question School-Family Partnership Strategy can be used as a pathway for educators and parents to work more effectively with each other – to improve communication, increase parent participation, nurture engagement, and engender better partnerships.


There will be two series:

  • One for Educators, with the third webinar on Tuesday, April 16; and
  • One for Parents, premiering on Tuesday, April 9. The Parent Series will also be offered in Spanish, with the first session on Thursday, April 11.

Upcoming PRN & TEA Webinar Series

Partners Resource Network is doing a series of collaborative webinars with the Texas Education Agency. The final webinar on April 30 covers Extended School Year (ESY). It will be conducted in English at 12:15 p.m. CST and in Spanish @ 1:15 p.m. CST. To register, click here.


During these webinars, TEA will do a Q&A section based on questions submitted prior to each collaborative webinar. Please submit your questions even if they are not directly related to the pre-determined topics of the currently planned webinars. Submit your questions by clicking here. After each webinar, the resulting Q&A will be provided in a document form in both English and Spanish.

Autism Awareness Month

Are you looking for ways to join in the celebration while promoting awareness and acceptance? Here are a few suggestions (as shared by the Autism Society):


  • Put on the Puzzle! The Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon is the most recognized symbol of the autism community in the world. Autism prevalence is now one in every 59 children in America. Show your support for people with autism by wearing the Autism Awareness Puzzle Ribbon – as a pin on your shirt, a magnet on your car, a badge on your blog, or even your Facebook profile picture – and educate folks on the potential of people with autism!
  • Connect with your neighborhood. Many communities hold special events throughout the month of April. But if you can’t find an event that suits you just right, create your own!
  • Watch a movie. Did you know that something that seems as simple as going to the movies is not an option for many families affected by autism? The Autism Society is working with AMC Theatres to bring special-needs families Sensory Friendly Films every month.
  • Donate to your favorite organization who provides services for individuals with autism. Help improve the lives of those impacted by autism with a financial gift.

Texas State Leadership for Autism Training

Education, both directly of children, and of parents and teachers, is currently the primary form of treatment for autistic spectrum disorders. (Educating Children with Autism)


The Texas Statewide Leadership for Autism Training (TSLAT) provides a mechanism to access training, technical assistance, support, and resources for educators who serve students with autism. Online courses and videos are targeted for school personnel yet are applicable to families, especially pages featuring Parent Interviews and Additional Learning Opportunities.


For a more family-friendly dive into evidence based practices for those with Autism Spectrum Disorders (ASD), explore the Autism Certification Center that features ASD Strategies in action for those who live with, love, or support individuals on the autism spectrum. This is an online video-based learning solution that provides everyone in your family with practical information, real-life examples, and skills to care for and support loved ones with ASD from early childhood through young adulthood.

Texas Autism Conference

August 1-2, 2019

San Antonio - Hyatt Regency Riverwalk Hotel


The purpose of the Texas Autism Conference is to provide parents, educators, and campus leadership with strategies, resources, tools, and evidence-based practices in the education and service of students with Autism Spectrum Disorder.


The conference will include general keynote addresses by Dr. Lori Ernsperger and Carol Gray, breakout sessions, and a parent panel discussion. The event also provides networking opportunities for conference participants to exchange successes, challenges and ideas on how to increase student performance and success in life.


The conference is sponsored by the Texas Education Agency and coordinated by the Education Service Center, Region 2. For more information, visit the conference website.

How to Help Your Child Love Reading

Start reading to your children from the time they're born. That's the advice from the American Academy of Pediatrics. By age 2, children who are regularly read to have a bigger vocabulary and better language comprehension.


Literacy experts say there's no wrong way to read to a child, but there are better ways to engage your little one with books. It's called active reading — making sure you're reading with your child, not just to them.

Positive Parenting Practices

Parenting is not easy. Many outside influences distract youth and add challenges to parenting efforts. A key parental role is helping teens understand that their health and well-being—now and in the future—are not simply a matter of chance, but a matter of choice.

Texas Early Learning Council Statewide Survey

The Texas Early Learning Council is conducting a statewide survey to better understand the needs and challenges of those accessing, providing, and supporting early childhood programs and services in Texas. The survey is open until this Friday, April 5 and should take no more than 20 minutes to complete. Questions intended for families and early childhood program and service providers are available in both English and Spanish.


Who should take the survey?

  • Families
  • Staff of early childhood programs and services (childcare, Head Start, public prekindergarten, ECI, and home visiting)
  • Staff of early childhood organizations (membership organizations, advocacy organizations, workforce boards, ESCs, etc.)
  • Community organizations/partners (businesses, health service providers, local governments, religious organizations, etc.)

Parent Opportunity for Research Study

Doctoral students at the University of Oklahoma are seeking parent participants for a new study. The purpose of this study is to understand the perceptions of parents on IEP dynamics and meeting experiences. This survey is designed for parents of a child with a disability AND an IEP to gauge nation-wide perspective. This a two-part study:


  1. Online survey about meeting experiences and parent-teacher dynamics (10-15 minutes)
  2. Optional phone/video interview at time of your convenience. Researcher will ask questions about your experiences in IEP meetings (30 mins-1 hour).
