The Tiger Times
The Monthly Franklin Family Newsletter - October 2021
It's hard to believe it, but October is here!
September was an amazingly full month at Franklin: students got back into the groove of school, and so much learning has been happening every day.
This month we have some exciting events coming up:
Family/Teacher Conferences will take place the week of 10/4 in the afternoons (Minimum Days all week). Your child's teacher will reach out to you to schedule your conference.
And, we hope you'll join for our Latinx Heritage Month evening event on 10/7 for all students and families! We'll be making salsa with Ms. Arroyo and hearing a book read by Ms. Khattab!
Finally, we're looking forward to our exciting outdoor Fall Festival on 10/29 - please sign up as a family volunteer! More details below.
Below you will also find some important reminders about what is expected from all Franklin families to continue to keep our community healthy and safe. We appreciate everything you are all doing - we know it isn't easy right now. Thankfully all of our safety measures are working, and we are happy to report that there has not been any Covid spread (more than 2 cases within a class) at our school. Please help us keep it up!
Lastly, we know that arrival and dismissal times have been stressful due to all of the construction on Foothill Blvd. and the Parking Attendants who have been ticketing Franklin cars. We wanted to share two notes:
- The Foothill Blvd. construction is ending this week! Hopefully the changes made will make the road safer for pedestrians.
- We have reached out to our City Council representative regarding the ticketing of our families, which we find completely unacceptable. We are working to end the ticketing and seeking traffic support instead!
Wishing you all a wonderful October. Thank you for your partnership.
Our best,
Ms. Lai & Ms. Sufrin

COVID Notes:
Here are a few important Covid notes:
1) Please make sure that the mask your child is wearing fits their face well. A number of students need to have their masks replaced at school because they arrived with a mask that is loose on their face or does not fit their nose. Masks should fit the face snugly and reach above your child's nose. Sending an extra in your child's backpack is very helpful too!
2) If your child is feeling sick and displaying ANY of the Covid symptoms (cough, fever, runny nose, sore throat, stomach issues, fatigue) you will be required to have your child tested for Covid (PCR test, not just the rapid test). In order for your child to return to school, we need you to share a negative PCR test result first. You can share the negative result by emailing the result, printing a copy, or showing it on your phone. We understand that waiting for the test result can take several days, and your child may already be feeling better. Nonetheless, the test result is necessary for us to make sure we are keeping all of Franklin safe.
3) Please complete the Primary Consent Form ASAP, so that we have your permission for your child to be tested for COVID in the case of possible exposure. We continue to have periodic Covid testing on-site at Franklin. This allows us to test your child without having to bother you during the work day.
4) You can have your child tested at an OUSD testing site for free. Please see details on locations and schedules here!
THANK YOU, FAMILIES! LET'S KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK TAKING CARE OF ONE ANOTHER!
Meet Our Garden Teacher, Anna:
Hello Franklin Families!
I am Franklin Elementary’s new FoodCorps Service Member! I have been teaching biweekly garden classes to the upper grade levels (3-5). In addition to my garden and food curriculum, I will be working at Franklin to foster a school-wide culture of health and promote healthy school meals through monthly school-wide Harvest of the Month School taste tests, hanging out with the students during lunch, and family food events!
October's Harvest of the Month is tomatoes! Not only do we have a ton of tomatoes growing in the Franklin garden, but Ms. Atkins and I will be organizing a school-wide tomato taste test during lunch on October 28th. We are looking for an enthusiastic parent or two to help me run the stand (hand out samples and help students give their feedback on a poster (whether they loved it, liked it, or tried it). Click here to fill out the volunteer form.
I am also looking for parent volunteers to help out in the garden and/or support some of the cooking classes that will be happening down the line. Please click here if you are interested!
Below are some photos from this week's soil class. (Photos include students doing a sensory mindfulness exercise in the garden, some popcorn harvested from the garden, and some tomatoes growing in the garden!)
ARE YOU INTERESTED IN VOLUNTEERING AT FRANKLIN?
If you're interested, please call the Franklin office or email Ms. Santiago at Mercedes.Santiago@ousd.org.
We are so grateful to already have several incredible parent volunteers helping out every day -
thank you to Eduardo, Shuling, Thuy, and Sue for all the help you've given Franklin already this year!
