Local Schools Perform Well on State Report Cards
Frederick County Public Schools (FCPS) recently received 2021-2022 Maryland School Report Cards for each of its schools. Report cards use a five star rating. Several measures are used to determine the star rating for each school.
The report card evaluates academic performance in reading, math and science, academic growth, English language proficiency, chronic absenteeism, school climate and well-rounded curriculum. For high schools, the state also measures students "on-track" in ninth grade and graduation rate.
Over 50 of FCPS schools were identified as either three four or five stars. No FCPS schools were below three stars. The report cards show that FCPS ranks in the top third in the state in overall student performance.
"Our students' academic performance, on this and other measures, speaks to their perseverance and commitment," FCPS Superintendent Dr. Cheryl L. Dyson said.
"While the data in this report card was collected last year, as a continuous improvement system, our teachers and administrators will fold it into the various measures we currently use to inform our instructional practices and school climate."
Results from the report cards are used by FCPS schools in continuous school improvement efforts. School staff regularly monitor student performance. The state report cards are an additional measure in evaluating school performance.
Maryland designed the report cards to meet federal requirements that help set standards for school accountability. Today, federal accountability standards for schools are legislated in the Every Student Succeeds Act.

Student Government News
Our Student vs. Staff Basketball games were a huge success! We’d like to send a huge thank you to Ethan Houck, Ricky Cicmanec, Garrett Bowie, Ethan Genos and Charlie Lawrence from the BHS Boys Basketball Team for coming over to help out. Our students loved seeing them in action. The 8th grade team did beat the staff this year, but staff maintained their wins over the 6th and 7th graders.
During our intermission, we had raffles with prizes for students participating in World Down Syndrome Spirit Day, students with perfect attendance all year, no referrals all year and honor roll all year.

Wellness Tip
PBIS School & Culture
What we think vs. What it actually means:
Talking Back
- Why we think it’s disrespectful:
Because we believe our authority should never be questioned by someone younger than us.
- What it actually means:
Your child is struggling to feel heard by you and needs support.
Disobedience
- Why we think it’s disrespectful:
Because we believe we know what’s best for our kids, and they should listen to us the first time, every time.
- What it actually means:
Your child needs more autonomy and responsibility and is looking to collaborate with you.
Ignoring
- Why we think it's disrespectful:
Because we believe children should always listen to everything we say. It’s our right as their parent to always be heard.
- What it actually means:
Your child may be distracted by something else, which can be a literal distraction or an internal distraction. They need you to tune in.
How you can help:
- Prioritize listening to your child’s thoughts, feelings, and concerns.
- Resist the urge to downplay, deny, or dismiss what they share with you.
- Find the deeper need beneath your child’s behaviors and emotions.
- Be curious about your own unmet needs.
- Check your expectations at the door.

Advanced Academic Specialist - Ms. Mossburg
8th grader Ema Smith represented Brunswick Middle School at the Frederick County Spelling Bee on March 12.
Math Specialist - Ms. French
This week, students took their final administration of the iReady Math assessment. Students took this assessment at the beginning and middle of the school year. The data from this assessment has been used throughout the year to monitor student growth and develop instructional plans for our students. This final administration will be used, along with other data points, to measure student growth from the beginning of the year and prioritize our instructional practices for the remainder of the school year and begin looking ahead to next year.
MCAP is just around the corner. Now is a great time to review material from the year. Above all, we want to encourage the students to put forth their best effort. If your student is interested in a practice test, follow this link, scroll to the bottom, then select “Practice Test”.
Thank you for your continued support of your students' success! Please continue to monitor your student’s progress and assignments on Schoology and reach out to us with any questions you have. Remember to always keep the math conversations going at home. Ask your student what they are learning in their math class or have them teach you a concept they are working on. Discuss recent summative assessments with them and if and how they plan to take advantage of reteaching, revisions, and reassessment opportunities if needed.
Reach out with any questions! Erica.French@fcps.org
Literacy Specialist - Mrs. Zimmerman
