Jackson eNews
Hello Jackson Families!
Happy New Year! I hope you all had a wonderful Winter Break. We were so excited to welcome our Jackson Jaguars back this morning! We know they will settle back into their routines quickly and make great strides toward their educational goals in the new year!
So many fun things happened the week before Winter Break that we want to share with you. First, we were thrilled that we surpassed our goal of 1,200 cans with a total of over 1,600 cans collected for Student Council's Canned Food Drive! To show our appreciation for all the donations, Mr. Riggle and I agreed to be "SLIMED" during the grade level Award Assemblies on Tuesday and Wednesday, 12/19 and 12/20! You can view the fun on the videos below! All donations were delivered to Minnie's Food Pantry that Wednesday and it was a great feeling to know we were helping families in our community. Thank you so much for your "CAN" do spirit!
During the Awards Assemblies, we were pleased to recognize many Jackson students for citizenship, extra effort, and A-Honor Roll. Please see the Awards section below for a list of student awards by grade level. Keep up the good work, Jaguars!
Big shout-out to Mr. Barnett, Jackson's Music Teacher, for coordinating the Holiday Sing-Along and concert during the Winter Assembly on Thursday. Our 5th grade choir sang Feliz Navidad accompanied by Mr. Barnett on the trumpet, Mr. Riggle on the mandolin, Mr. Valentin on the guitar, Mr. Sotomayor on the drums, Asumi Okamoto on the violin and Ms. Borghi with vocals and tamborine. Then, all students had an opportunity to sing along and dance along with many holiday favorites. It was such a treat!
During the Winter Assembly, we also announced Jackson's Teacher of the Year--Ms. Liz Steinbaugh, ESL Coach and Interventionist! She was nominated by our staff and will represent us well at the District level. Ms. Steinbaugh works with all of our ELL (English Language Learners) students to ensure that they have the skills they need to be successful in school and life. She is known for building lasting relationships with the students and families--they feel how much she cares. Ms. Steinbaugh is also a student council advisor, an active participant in Multicultural night and many other school events. Congratulations, Ms. Steinbaugh!
Jackson will be hosting a Career Day for our upper grades (grades 3-5) on Wednesday, January 24. If you are interested in participating in Career Day, this Friday, January 12th, is the last day to submit your interest form. Our students would love to hear about your career and the education/certifications required to work in this field!
Thank you!

Classroom Lessons
Welcome to the Counselors’ Corner! We will use this section of the eNews to inform you all of topics we will be covering in our Counselor lessons and any other important or useful information! Students come with their class to the counselor bi-weekly to receive lessons. We absolutely love this time with them!
For our last lesson of December, we focused on Diversity and Inclusion. During these lessons, students gained a sense of acceptance, respect, support and inclusion for self and others in the school environments. Students also learned how to form positive, respectful, and supportive relationships with other students by asking questions respectfully and listening carefully and non-judgmentally. We also discussed cultural awareness, sensitivity and responsiveness. Students learned the importance of differences and how to explore differences in curious and respectful ways. Through accurate and respectful words, students described how they are different from people who share their identities and those who have other identities.
Jaguar of the Month Program
Jaguar of the Month is a student reward program (Grades K-5) that incorporates character traits from the program, CharacterStrong. A new character trait is introduced every month and students will engage in classroom discussions and activities to reinforce the trait. At the end of the month, each teacher will identify a student who consistently demonstrated the targeted trait. These students will be recognized on JagTube, receive a certificate, wristband, and a Jackson Jaguar pencil. Grade level group photos will be displayed on the bulletin board near the front office AND Jaguars of the Month will attend a popsicle party with Dr. Roach, our principal, and Mr. Riggle, our assistant principal!
Our Jaguar of the Month Trait is Empathy! Our definition of Empathy is understanding and connecting to other people’s feelings. Check out the CharacterStrong Family Letter for more information about PurposeFull People and some fun ways you can join us in teaching and reinforcing Responsibility! Monthly Family Newsletters will be sent home that outline the CharacterStrong skills students are learning in class and provide fun ideas to grow as a family at home.
We hope you find this Counselors’ Corner helpful! Please never hesitate to reach out for anything! We are always here to support you and your students!
Thank you!

Volunteering
Whether giving of your time, your resources, or just providing a little encouragement to those in our Jackson Community, we LOVE our volunteers!
Jackson teachers and staff are looking for family volunteers to help during all Jackson lunch and recess periods. Beginning this school year, Plano ISD is requiring Cafeteria doors to remain locked during all lunch periods. This means a staff member has to supervise the cafeteria doors for students needing to step out for water or restroom breaks.
Your help will allow us to provide enough supervision to keep our students safe! Volunteer time slots are in 30 minute to 1 hour increments. Volunteers have the opportunity to monitor students for a 30 minute lunch and/or a 30 minute recess. While volunteering, you will not be able to eat with the children, but you will likely be helping with opening food/drink items & assisting in the lunch line.
All volunteers will need to create an account and complete an application, online orientation and background check through the Plano ISD volunteer management system, VOLY, to be eligible for district/school volunteer opportunities. Please visit plano.voly.org to create a volunteer account and begin this process. These items will need to be completed by volunteers each school year.
An email will be sent to the volunteer applicant communicating the status of their application and criminal history search within 3-5 business days of completing these steps. Volunteer approval status can also be viewed by the volunteer by logging into their account. Volunteers will need to complete the online orientation as well to be eligible to volunteer.
Once approved through VOLY, please sign-up at the link below.
