Student Support/Interventions

Many students and teachers welcome the holiday season and the break it brings from instruction, testing, and homework after a busy fall. But the holidays can also bring anxiety and stress. Students feel the pressure just as much as adults, and some do not feel comfort and joy during the holidays.

Social and emotional learning (SEL) can support students and teachers alike through the holidays and the long winter break.

HERE is a great flyer to show all the resources our school has to offer to support your student's Mental Health. You can also go to our South Schools

Social Emotional Resources Site for more support.

Special Education

Reminder: In order for a student to be set up for success, the student needs to be provided with appropriate Personal Independence & Competence for daily instruction. Please supply all students with the following when delivering instruction to enhance your students engagement in learning:

  • Independence is facilitated by an adult when necessary, but not excessively to promote dependence on prompts.

  • Student’s abilities to stay on task and work independently are assessed and goals and objectives are developed as appropriate (i.e. on task time, sequences multiple tasks)

  • What independent work, amount of work, and what the student should do following independent work are specified using visuals and choice whenever possible.

Please note that our library doors will be closed for an off-site training on Friday, December 10th. Please plan on dropping any enrichment returns by the library on a different day.

Homeschooling Advice

Graphic Design Beginners Class Perfect for Homeschoolers!

I have a 12 year old who is gifted in all things computers. His older brother (who now works in the tech industry) also had this gift, and something I realized from parenting him is that you have to harness, hone, and guide those aptitudes so your techie kids don’t just play games all day (and all night!).

By the time my older son, Blake, was 14, I was able to give him small tasks that helped me with my blog. And by the time he graduated high school, he was editing podcasts and video, and had a successful blog of his own!

Did he play computer games? Yes.

But, I wasn’t about to let that be the ONLY thing he knew how to do. He needed useful, tangible skills, and those skills led to a full-time job in the tech industry before he had even graduated college.

The Virtual Compassion Corner

Attention high school parents and students, Cabrillo Point Academy is excited to announce a new mental wellness program for high school students (grades 9-12), The Virtual Compassion Corner.

The Virtual Compassion Corner is designed for high school students to self refer for mental health support when they are having a difficult time in their life. They can meet with a counselor or a school psychologist virtually during school hours to discuss current life situations that may be impacting their overall functioning.

Students can complete the Virtual Compassion Corner form with the link here to notify a counselor they are seeking help. Once the form is submitted, the student receives a confirmation notice and email that contain an appointment link. They can choose to set up a 20 minute phone call or zoom meeting during school hours. If the student does not sign up immediately, we will reach out to the student directly and check in.

Yvonne Kahlen - OC Family Liaison

I have been a homeschooling mom for seventeen years. I have three children ranging in age from 17 to 22. I homeschooled my two oldest from Kindergarten through 12th grade. My youngest is currently a senior in high school at Cabrillo Point Academy and taking college courses concurrently. I am passionate about homeschooling and love that you can tailor your curriculum to your child’s learning style. I am excited to work with other homeschooling parents and look forward to meeting you at an event soon! Happy schooling!

Maria Ramirez - OC Special Programs Family Liaison

Hi, I am a Mother of 4 sons, and grandma of 3 little ones. I learned about homeschooling about 5 years ago and I loved the whole concept. I homeschooled my youngest son and he loved it! I wish I had known this way of teaching when my other sons were little. I love helping families to thrive, and be successful! I am here to help you in any way I can.
