GREAT DEBATER MENTORSHIP PROGRAM!
APPLICATION TO BE A NYC DEBATE MENTOR!
About the New York City Urban Debate League
Our Mission is that every school should have a debate team and every student should have access to the best debate education opportunities. We provide practices every day, tournaments every weekend, workshops every month, and summer debate camps from the first day of summer to the last day of summer. Year round we provide one of the most nationally award winning afterschool academic programs according to the National Endowment for the Arts, National Endowment for the Humanities, Institute for Museum and Library Services, the Presidential Committee on the Arts and Humanities, and the White House Youth Awards. Today, we work with over 100 schools and 1000 students each year. We are the largest middle school debate league in the nation, second largest high school debate league in the nation and first elementary school debate league in the nation. And all of this has been accomplished because of volunteers like you.

About the NYC Debate Mentorship Program
The New York City Urban Debate League provides debate education opportunities for low income schools and students. In order to do this we need your help! We need people passionate about debate! So if you're a former debater, high school debater, college debater, lawyer, educator, or want to learn about debate - we need your help in NYC schools! Debate Mentors work with a school at least once a month. Your schedule is completely up to you. Most schools host practices after school from 3:00pm-5:00pm, some schools have practices during the school day, and other teachers are free to meet early morning, evenings or weekends. So our job is to find a school that is right for you! Contact us at nycudl@gmail.com for more information.
Why Be a Debate Mentor?
In 2011 there was no debate league for the city. Less than 1% of schools and 1% of students had access to competitive debate opportunities. NYC Debate Mentors are changing these statistics. Mentors help to bring debate to a school and make that debate program successful and sustainable. Mentors serve as a role model, friend and advisor to their debate mentee students. Mentors help the school teacher with learning debate and during debate practices, help students prepare for debates, and serve as a judge at debate tournaments. Being a Debate Mentor offers numerous opportunities to share your passion for debate, impact a student and school for life, experience and development of your teaching, coaching and mentoring skills, as well as networking with all our other volunteers at tournaments and special events.
New York City Debate Mentor Opportunities
Practices!
The NYC Debate Club mentors help students and school teachers at least once a month during debate practices to prepare for the upcoming debate tournaments.
Tournaments!
NYC Debate Mentors can serve as coaches and judges at our Saturday debate tournaments. Each month we host a high school, middle school and elementary school debate tournament. Breakfast and Lunch is provided to all students and volunteers.
Travel!
NYC Debate Mentors also have the opportunity to travel with their team or with the NYC Debate League to out of city and state tournaments. We always need judges and volunteers at our tournaments.
Public Speaking!
The first lesson for all our new debaters and teachers is in public speaking. Many of our students have never delivered a speech in public before. Not to mention that public speaking is ranked as a #1 fear. So one of the most critical needs for our Mentors is to teach and role model public speaking.
Debate!
As a Debate Mentor you will engage students in debates and debate skills - argumentation, notetaking, questioning, research and evidence, clash, and all the other skills necessary for a Great Debater.
Academics!
You will not find a more rigorous academic program than debate - reading, writing, critical thinking, current events, civics, philosophy, political science and more. All students are expected to be reading and watching the news on a daily basis. Debate closes the achievement gap, civics achievement gap and provides many opportunities for our students to be accepted into college and also many of our students receive full or partial scholarships because of debate.
Special Events!
We have several events throughout the year including public debates, community debates, law firm debates, volunteer appreciation nights, and other special events!
College and Career Opportunities!
Debaters and Mentors will have the opportunity to travel to college campuses, meet college debaters and instructors, learn about career opportunities in law and other professions and meet career professionals. Being a Debate Mentor is a fantastic addition to your resume.
Graduate School
Top debaters are recruited by colleges and receive full or partial scholarships to college because of debate. In recent years our debaters have won full scholarships to Columbia University, Dartmouth University, Wake Forest University, and other top colleges.
