Garden City Middle School Spring 2021
šEnd-of-Year Regents and Final Exams
The end of this school year will look different than it has in the past. If this were a normal year, the last day of classes would have been on June 11th and then we would have had finals and Regents exams.
Instead, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) is requiring regular classes to continue through June 22, 2021 for the Middle School. In addition, Regents exams are optional this year as required by the NYSED. The New York State Education Department applied for a complete waiver for Regents exams this year, however, it was denied by the United States Secretary of Education.
Studentsā grade averages for the year will be calculated as 25% for each of the four marking periods. No separate final exam grades OR Regents grades will be included. Teachers may still be administering exams in their classes; however, these exams will only count for the fourth quarter.
Even though we are offering the Regents exams in Algebra I and Earth Science, students are not required to take them. Students who do not take them will receive an exemption (Ex.) on their transcript as long as they receive a passing grade in the corresponding course, similar to last year. The exemption will still enable students to earn Regents diplomas and Regents diplomas with honors or advanced designation. In other words, the exemption will not have any impact on Regents diplomas. Students who choose to take the Regents exams may request to have that score added on their transcript, but it will not be included in their average for the year. You will receive an āopt-in formā sometime in May if you choose to have your child take a Regents exam.
Class time will not be used for review for the Regents exams, nor is the school offering Regents review classes after school. Even though we are required to offer these exams, we are not requiring students to take them; therefore, we are not using instructional time to prepare for them. Each academic department will determine their end of year classroom activities, whether it includes projects or exams. Students will continue to be engaged in learning for the remainder of the school year. There may be differences based on the level of class (Regents), type of class (Elective) and the curriculum required to be completed in that course.
- June 23 and 24 are Regents exam days for the Middle School. Students will only come to school if they are taking a Regents exam.
- The following are regular 9-period days of instruction: June 14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 21, and 22. June 22 will be the last day of class.
- Students who do not take one of the required Regents exams will receive an exemption (āEXā) on their transcript, similar to 2020. Students must pass the course in order to qualify for the Regents exam exemption.
- Exemptions will still enable students to earn Regents diplomas and Regents diplomas with honors or advanced designation. Please reach out to your school counselor with any specific questions regarding your childās diploma status.
- In order to maintain equity for students who are learning remotely or are quarantined, we will not administer final exams. Regents exams will not be calculated in studentsā final average. Each quarter will count for 25% of a studentās final average.
- The NYSESLAT is required for all English Language Learners (ELLs). ELLs and their parents will receive separate notice about these exams.

What Lifts You?
Mrs. Athanasopoulos's seventh grade art students carefully designed each feather to create these wings. These wings were built to encourage our community to ask the inspiring question, "What lifts you?" We encourage you to dream big, spread your wings, and soar!

šāāļøLeo Straus is on a Mission!
Hello, everyone! My name is Leo Straus. I am a seventh grade student in Ms. Fasulo's English class, and recently we read an article about Craig Kielburger. In that article, we learned that Craig Kielburger started his own charity at the age of 12. His mission was to help children all over the world. He travelled all over the world in order to learn about children in poverty, and how to get them out. Learning about this inspired me. If he can do it, why canāt I? A few days later, I finished my research and had a clear mission in sight.
My mission was to help children learn to swim. Swimming is a difficult skill, and all over the world, there are 4 billion people who canāt swim. That's 400,000 drowning deaths! When I heard this, I knew I needed to fix this. I quickly set to work. I asked my friends for help and resources, and as a competitive swimmer myself, I have many swimmer friends, who volunteered to help me! Right now, we are all working on a website, designing a GoFundMe page, and getting our 501(c)(3) to go through! Right now, we should be an official charity in a mere two weeks!
I couldnāt have done this without my friends, and my teachers! Every teacher I have in Team 7B has been so kind and wonderful to me! I must give a shoutout to my fantastic English teacher, Ms. Fasulo! She has taught me so much about English literature, and has kicked off my idea by introducing me to Craig Kielburger. Thank you to everyone that has helped me!
