The History of The Stocking

"The stockings were hung by the chimney with care."

Everyone knows the poem that goes a little something like this, "The stockings were hung by the chimney with care..... And filled all the stockings; then turned with a jerk." But why do we have stockings?

The Legend

The history of the stocking begins with a man and his three daughters who were very poor. The man thought his daughters would never get married, even though they were beautiful, they had no money. This made it hard for them to be wed. A man by the name of St. Nicholas heard about their troubles and decided to help. He slipped down the chimney, and found the girls' stockings hanging by the fire to dry. He put gold coins in the stockings, and disappeared...... Everyone heard about what St. Nicholas did, so they started to put out their stockings as well.

Every year since then, people put out stockings for Santa to fill. Now stockings are more festive, colorful, and personalized. They are hung anywhere and everywhere, on chimney mantles, stair rails, and on the wall.

Santa fills your stocking!
