From Mr. Clemente

I hope everyone has had a great summer break! It's hard to believe that it's nearly time to start up again with the 2019 - 2020 school year. I'm really looking forward to starting fresh and creating with this group of students!

I'd like to direct your attention to some materials before marching band camp starts up on Monday, 7/29. Please click on the links below for information.

General Marching Band Information

What Do I Need for Marching Band?

Pre-Game Music

You'll find lots of information in the above links, but here are some key points:

  • Marching band camp runs 7/29 - 8/2 and 8/5 - 8/8. Rehearsals start at 9:00 AM and end at 5:00 PM, with lunch at 12:00 PM
  • See above for what to bring, but take the time now to get outside and used to being in the heat. Marching band is a primarily outdoor activity, and students should start to become acclimated to our wonderful Florida weather by taking a walk, doing some work around the outside of the house, mowing the lawn, playing frisbee, etc. Coming straight from the couch watching TV all summer to band camp does not set you up well for the heat.
  • Sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses are essential! Students will have lots of time to reapply sunscreen when we are out for longer periods of time.
  • Instrument in good working order
  • Both Pre-Game and Halftime music, printed and in a 3-ring binder with page protectors. Pre-Game music is linked above, and students should have Halftime music from Mini-Camp back in May.

The Thursday and Friday prior to marching band camp will be optional days for marching band uniform fittings. If you are able to make it in any time during the fittings times listed above - no matter what grade level - please come in to have your uniform fitted. I have separated the times out by grade in hopes to avoid long lines and overwhelming our parent volunteers. All students who are unable to make these optional fitting opportunities will be fit during marching band camp.

Keep a close eye on your email over the next week and a half. There will be lots of information coming out from both myself as well as other parent volunteers.

I hope to see everyone at our upcoming Skate Night at Semoran Skateway on Saturday, 7/27! Free for students, parents, and families!

Thank you to all the parents and students who have been helping this summer with renovation to the Band Semi Trailer and painting the Band office! Thanks to Keith Gavin, Lori Gavin, Olivia Bensch, Maddie Visconti, Beth Visconti, James Visconti, CeCe Gutman, and anyone else I missed!

Please join me in welcoming our new Associate Director of Bands, Mr. Daniel Smith!

Daniel Smith is beginning his teaching career as Associate Director of Bands at Winter Park High School. He completed his Senior Internship at Jackson Heights Middle School under Mr. Jeremy Williamson. His teaching duties at Jackson Heights included Symphonic Band, Concert Band, 2 Beginning Bands, Percussion Class, and Jazz Ensemble.

Before his position at Winter Park High School, Mr. Smith earned a Bachelor of Music Education degree from Stetson University in DeLand, FL. While at Stetson Mr. Smith performed with the University Jazz Ensemble, University Symphonic Band, University Symphony Orchestra, University Concert Choir, University Saxophone Ensemble/Quartet, University Clarinet Choir, Southern Winds Symphonic Wind Ensemble, and Stetson Hatter Pep Bands. In the fall of 2017 Mr. Smith had the privilege as performing as a soloist with the University Symphony Orchestra as one of the winners of the Annual Concerto Competition. Additionally, he was a part of many professional organizations including Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia, and the Collegiate National Association for Music Education.

Since 2015, Mr. Smith has been very active in the central Florida community working with many different middle and high school band programs as a woodwind technician. Most recently he has helped with organizing and rehearsing the Central Florida Youth Saxophone and Clarinet choirs in Semniole County.

Big picture

The Band is looking for volunteers to help serve our Band Camp Meals. Lunch is served at 12:00 PM each day of camp, so volunteers would need to be available from 11:30 AM for setup until about 1:00 PM when cleanup is finished. If you are interested, please contact Melanie Dressler directly at
