Hiawatha Elementary
Week of October 18th
Hello Husky Families-
It is hard to believe that the end of Quarter 1 is this Friday! You will receive your students progress report electronically on Friday, October 29th. If you have any questions about your students' progress, please contact their teacher.
Wednesday, October 20th is Unity Day. We will all be wearing orange to show our support of kindness, acceptance and inclusion for all. Please help us support Unity Day and have your child wear orange on Wednesday. Teachers will be focusing on kindness throughout the day and spending time talking about the importance of anti-bullying.
Halloween is quickly approaching! We will celebrate Halloween on Friday October, 29th with a parade and classroom celebration. Students and staff can come dressed in costumes, however remember that masks must still be worn. Any weapon accessories will not be allowed to be at school, so please keep these accessories at home. Weather pending we will have a parade outside going around the block beginning at 1:30 p.m. We will head North on East Ave to 25th Street, head East to Scoville and back South to Hiawatha. You are welcome to join us somewhere on the parade route, we just ask that you wear a mask as well.
Your classroom teacher will be in contact regarding any store bought snacks that they would like donated. As a wellness district we do not allow candy to be brought into the school. If students want to give out a treat to classmates they should be non-edible, (pencil, stickers, erasers, etc.). We appreciate you helping to keep everyone safe and healthy!
Please make sure your child has an extra mask in their backpack. Many students are needing to change their mask throughout the day for various reasons and would be helpful if they have an additional mask with them.
Please remember to complete the RAPTOR screening every morning before 8:15 a.m. This needs to be completed each day for every student. We appreciate you helping us to keep everyone safe and healthy. All students should be lined up on the playground by 8:20, entrance to the building begins at 8:25.
If your child is exhibiting any symptoms on the RAPTOR screener or has been a close contact to a COVID-19 positive case, your child should stay home. Nurse Cindy will call and follow up with you regarding your child’s illness and when they can return to school.
Stay safe and healthy Huskies!

News from Nurse Cindy
Children who come to school with symptoms of illness are not in the best frame of mind for learning. Please do not send your child to school if any of the following symptoms are present:
“Runny” nose, especially with green mucous
Rashes or any scratching for unknown reasons, with or without fever
Red, watery, itchy eyes that were crusted shut upon awakening
COVID-19 Symptoms:
Sore throat
Chills or fever of 100.4 or higher
Diarrhea or vomiting
Coughing (new, constant)
Headache
Muscle aches or body aches
New loss of taste or smell
Severe abdominal pain
Difficulty breathing or faster than normal breathing
If your child shows any signs of COVID, please keep home and consult with your Doctor or school nurse about testing. Continue to keep your child home until instructed by your doctor/medical professional that it is safe to return to school. All elevated temperatures must return to a normal temperature for 24 hours without the use of anti-fever medicine (i.e. Tylenol, Motrin, Advil). Please call the school each day your child is sick to report their absence.
Every time your child misses school to see a doctor, have the doctor write a note. Bring the note to school when the child returns.
Thank you for your cooperation in this important matter. Together we can keep all of the Staff and students healthy and ready to participate in school feeling their very best! If you have any questions please call me at any time.
PAPER
District 100 is proud to announce our partnership with PAPER, a tutoring program available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week for all 3rd through 8th grade students. PAPER is a chat-based, on-line tutoring program that provides opportunities for students to receive feedback and support in multiple languages from highly-trained tutors in a variety of content areas. Beginning today, all students in grades 3-8 will have access to PAPER on their iPads and throughout the week, teachers will introduce students to the program and teach them how to access a live tutor. The attachments below provide some information for families about PAPER and you can also visit our website for additional information on the program.
District 100’s partnership with PAPER provides a valuable tool to support continuous learning and growth, and we encourage our 3rd through 8th grade students and families to take advantage of all the program has to offer.
Safety Guidelines
Here are a few of the guidelines that D100 will be following for the school year:
Per the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) proclamation, all schools will resume regular, full in-person schedules for all students.
District 100 will work closely with the families of students who are home bound and/or have significant health conditions, as we do in any school year, to determine the best instructional forum to meet individual student needs.
We will begin the year with multiple mitigation strategies in place to ensure a safe return for students and staff. Below is a summary of the mitigation strategies being implemented in District 100 and you can find more detailed information on the CDC website.
District 100 will continue to encourage and provide opportunities for all eligible students and staff to receive vaccinations.
Masks will be required for all students and staff while indoors and on buses.
Masks may be removed outdoors, if physical distancing can be maintained.
Parents will be asked (not mandated) to share if their child has been vaccinated. This will help with determining quarantine.
Three-foot social distancing will be maintained, to the greatest extent possible.
Remote instruction will be made available to students if they need to quarantine during the school year due to exposure.
Fully vaccinated individuals are not required to quarantine if they are asymptomatic.
Regular breakfast and lunch service will resume and additional spaces for meal service will be utilized, when necessary.
Daily self-certification and BINAX-NOW testing for symptomatic students and staff will continue. At this time, we plan to provide optional saliva screening for unvaccinated students and staff.
The cleaning, hygiene, and ventilation protocols that were in place last year will continue.
School-specific procedures will be provided as the school year approaches.
