Hilltop Happenings

Blue Valley Early Childhood

From the Principal

Welcome to your "last week/this week" edition of Hilltop Happenings!

Thanksgiving is a favorite holiday of mine, for sure. Gratitude is universal across cultures, languages, and traditions. It feels good to be grateful, and if that weren't enough, there is increasing research demonstrating the positive effects of a grateful attitude! In fact a recent study found that gratitude in children had the strongest relationship to life satisfaction.

Looking for ways to introduce more gratitude into your family life? This quick article is a good start. Prefer a video? This 12 minute one is a goodie. Have MORE time? I love this one, too...

I wish each of you a wonderful Thanksgiving! It will just be my family of four this year, but I'll still insist on cooking a whole spread -- and eating it for a week!

If you are traveling, be safe, and enjoy time with your family.

As a reminder... NO SCHOOL for the remainder of this week. School will resume on Monday, December 2.

Make sure to check the new items, below!!

What could be better than a tasty (reasonably) healthy dinner that you don't have to cook AND helping your school's PTA?? Just in time for you to run out of Thanksgiving leftovers!

Big picture

Picture Makeup Day

Students who were absent or not yet enrolled on our first picture day have the opportunity for a make up day on Wednesday, December 4. If your child was absent or not yet enrolled on our previous picture day, you don't need to do anything at this point. We will send ordering information to you.

If your child DID take a photo but their eyes were closed, or there was another issue, let your child's teacher know so that they an be photographed, as well.

Help for the Holidays

Winter holidays remind us to give to others. We are fortunate to live in a giving community. Hilltop PTA maintains a "Hug Fund" of gift cards so that we can respond to a Hilltop family who may have an acute need.

We invite you to contribute to this fund! Please send your gift cards to school where we will keep them safe until they are needed.

  • Place them in an envelope marked "Hug Fund"
  • If the amount is not apparent, please mark it with a sticky note or sharpie marker
  • Useful cards include WalMart and QuikTrip as they can be used for a wide range of needs such as gas, food, diapers, etc.

We will accept gifts at any time, but encourage you to make a gift before November 21.

Is your family in need of holiday help? Please reply to this message to contact me confidentially, click here to email DeLynn Jenkins, or call her at 913-624-2904. DeLynn can also share information regarding weekend backpack snacks from Community for Caring.

Bring your ID!

Hilltop is committed to school safety. As with other Blue Valley schools, we've taken a number of steps to ensure that our building is a safe place for our students and staff. Over the summer, we had modifications to our front window and reinforced all of the glass at our interior entrance. While our Welcome Center (lobby) remains accessible, only authorized adults may enter past the office.

Please be aware that with the completion of the last front desk modification, we will more strictly enforce the district policy of requiring ALL non-Blue Valley staff to show a government issued photo ID in order to enter our school.

We appreciate your consistent practice of this requirement. In order to keep a consistent practice, we will ask this of all adults -- even those we know well. As you can imagine, this can make Gillian and those at the front desk feel a little awkward, so thanks in advance for having your ID ready for Stay & Play or other classroom activities.

Of course, if you are just dropping off or picking up and don't need to come past the office, it will be business as usual.

Coats and Car Seats

Thanks to our families for your diligent use of car seats and boosters every time your child is in the car. You are likely aware that the American Academy of Pediatrics and other safety experts recommend that children in car seats DO NOT wear coats under the car seat straps. We are committed to making sure the car line is both safe and efficient.

For our students still in car seats with a five point harness, we will have children wear coats from the building to the car, but will leave it unzipped. We will help them quickly remove it before assisting them into their car seat.

For our students in belt-positioning boosters, we will keep their coats on, but you may choose to have your child remove his or her coat after buckling.

Of course, you are always welcome to walk in to pick your child up from the welcome area. We appreciate that you wait near the orange chairs until the students come out.

Bond 2020

The Blue Valley community will have an opportunity to invest in facilities, safety and technology through an upcoming bond election. Blue Valley’s Board of Education approved a resolution for a January 2020 mail-ballot election that will be a no tax rate increase for Blue Valley taxpayers. Investing in quality public schools maintains strong property values and provides a positive economic impact.

Hilltop Learning Center will benefit from safety upgrades in this bond package. Click here to see how Bond 2020 will impact the school your child will attend after Hilltop!

Miss the PTA meeting? No problem! Click here or on the image to view the video Dr. White shared with us.

You will receive more communication before your ballot arrives in January. Thanks in advance for becoming informed and sharing information with Blue Valley friends and neighbors who may not have children in school.

The next PTA meeting will take place on Monday, January 6 at 6:30 PM. Watch for more details!
