Building Blocks of Literacy
This is the second in a series of four workshops presented by principals and teachers in the district. This evening's topic Building Blocks of Literacy will look at the the key components of literacy, including phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, fluency and comprehension. Using a breakout session format, classroom teachers and Reading Specialists will share ways that parents can reinforce those literacy skills at home in meaningful and engaging ways.
Below are highlights of breakout sessions by grade cluster:
K-2:
Kindergarten through second graders are developing many reading strategies that are essential to building a strong literacy foundation. Our sessions will focus on ways to help your child at home with games!
Games will focus on the following areas:
· Sight Words
· Word Families
· Spelling
· Vocabulary
· Reading Fluency
3-5:
Understanding Informational Text Structures
Understanding Literary Informational Text
Scaffolding Grade Level Text
Retelling & Summarizing
6-8:
