The Shoally Creek "Tweet"
October 2019
A Message from the Principal:
Fall Greetings, Shoally Creek Elementary Families!
We had a very exciting month of September here at Shoally Creek Elementary School!! One of the highlights was our BIG REVEAL at our annual Open House event! We revealed our D2Reads campaign in which every elementary student in Spartanburg District 2 received their very own copy of the same book, Mr. Popper's Penguins by Florence and Richard Atwater at the same time! We have been having fun reading the book together, answering daily trivia questions and getting visits with our own Captain Cook! Students are filling a calendar as they read each chapter and will be able to turn it in for prize drawings at the end of October! This is just one way that we are building and supporting a l♥ve of reading for our students here at SCES!!
Please continue to read this month's newsletter for more information and calendar items! As always, thank you for making Shoally Creek Elementary a great place to learn!

Sending positive energy your way!

Read Your Way to the Big Game!
Read Your Way to the Big Game!
Help establish a strong literacy foundation for your child and support South Carolina & Clemson's championship traditions by participating in the South Carolina Department of Education’s Read Your Way to the Big Game contest.
The Read Your Way to the Big Game Contest is an annual reading event open to students in pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade in public, private, and home schools that encourages reading and literacy proficiency.
All pre-kindergarten through eighth-grade students who read six books will qualify to win tickets to the Clemson vs. South Carolina game on November 30. Once students have completed their readings, they should turn in the list of books read to their teacher. Two overall grand prize winners will receive four tickets and pre-game sideline passes to the Clemson vs. South Carolina game.
Schools with at least 70% student participation will be entered to win one of two $2,000 school library grants. Five participating teachers will be randomly selected to win $500 for their classroom. Two teachers and/or school library media specialists who has the best decorated bulletin board, wall or door will win $500 each for their classroom.
Visit SCReads.org for the full contest details!

Become a Mentor!
According to Harvard University's Center on Developing Child, "Every child who ends up doing well has had at least one stable and committed relationship with a supportive adult." This year, our school is partnering with Mentor Upstate, a nonprofit organization, that seeks to support children with one-on-one positive relationships. As we launch this exciting program, we are looking for committed adults who are willing to support and encourage ONE student for the year. If you or someone you know from our school community can give 30 minutes a week, we need you!!
If you have any questions, you are invited to email the director of Mentor Spartanburg, at natalie@mentorupstate.org.
Reminders
*All afternoon transportation changes must be communicated to the front office by 11:00 am. Please reference the Student Handbook for further information.
*Please remember the South Carolina Compulsory Attendance Laws and Regulations in regards to the number of minutes students must attend school each day. Every minute that a student is not in class is counted and reported to the state. If a student misses even 15 minutes of class, this adds up to over an hour of class each week. Please make every minute count for learning!
