Here are some academic happenings in our classroom:
Language Arts: Students will have weekly word sorts to practice reading and writing. The goal is to learn to spell new words and apply these new words to our writing.
Reading: Students will continue to receive small group daily instruction according to reading levels. We will focus on fluency and story elements where we identify title, author, illustrator, characters, setting, main events and sequence.
Writing: Students will continue to write effectively to communicate ideas. We will continue to use appropriate capitalization and punctuation. We will start to use closing sentences in our paragraph writing.
Word wall words will continue to be learned weekly.
Math: Unit 3 Part 2 Numeration
We will count orally by 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s to 120. 2s can be tricky for first graders. Extra practice at home is appreciated!
Place Value is a focus during this unit and many first graders have a hard time grasping place value. For example if I say look at this number 52. What number is in the 10s place, this can be tricky for students. Generating place value dialog at home is encouraged. We will be practicing a lot at school. We use a lot of visuals and manipulates in class for place value.
We will also compare numbers using greater than, less than and equal to.
Social Studies: Economics: goods and services, money, producers and consumers.
