From the Asst. Principal
No one disputes the fact that teens today struggle in ways that most of the adults of today do not understand. Growing up in the ‘80’s and 90’s, the at-risk behaviors were all external factors such as drinking, smoking, drugs, and teenage pregnancy. The numbers in every one of those categories have dropped tremendously. However, today’s teens face far different issues.
Though there are many arguments about the causes, depression and anxiety are gripping our children at an unprecedented rate. This struggle is only exacerbated with the use of social media. The data clearly shows that the more our kids use social media, the poorer our children fair with mental health and well-being.
While there are a few benefits, if we as parents are going to allow our teens access, we must be diligently monitoring the usage. As we see at JMS often, there is just too much access to each other for many of these young people, and disagreements quickly become nasty or students become targeted.
If you would like help understanding how to monitor your child’s usage or feel like your child is being targeted online, please do not hesitate to stop in, call, or email us.

What are Study Tables @ JMS?
These are supported work sessions hosted after school in the JMS Library on Mondays and Thursdays. The library remains open from 3:00 to 4:15 pm to students wanting to use the space for academic reasons/purposes...with two teachers available for any help that may be needed!
Why does JMS host these sessions?
This after-school opportunity is designed to provide a positive & productive place for Jasper Middle School students to:
-complete homework assignments and class projects
-study for upcoming tests or quizzes in any class
-devote time to AR reading goals for ELA
-complete assigned lessons online
-make up missing/late classwork
-improve time management and study skills
The Semester 1 work sessions in the library will be monitored and managed by JMS staff members: Ms. Young and Mrs. Beth Gentry.
All students in attendance will be expected to follow the rules/guidelines and submit a participation form with parent permission. Copies of the participation form will be available in the office and in the library, but you can also print your own or ask your homeroom teacher!
Please note that transportation is not provided - you must make arrangements to leave and get home safely at 4:15 pm.
Questions? Please email Mrs. Michaela Eckerle at meckerle@gjcs.k12.in.us or visit Room 510!
