Life is mine for the Taking!
Oberon's Playlist
Theme: You should do what you want to in life.
In the play A Midsummer Nights Dream, by Shakespeare, Oberon, the Fairy King does as he pleases, and takes what he wants from life not really paying attention to consequences. He finds that using magic can often make life more interesting and that conflict between people who love each other is the most entertaining thing of all. But mainly his philosophy is live life as you want to and take enjoyment from what you can.
Song 1:
"You Belong with Me", by Taylor Swift
Taylor Swift- You Belong With Me Lyrics (:
This song easily relates to the relationship between Oberon, Titania, and the little Indian boy. It's about how you belong with me, the message Oberon is trying to get across to Titania, and how one day you'll wake up and see that what you're looking for has been here the whole time. Him. Both Taylor Swift and Oberon believe that the person that their trying to get a message across to just doesn't get how great they are and that they are the ones that the person is in love with not the other person. This is exactly how Oberon behaves in the play when concerning the little Indian boy. He goes on about how HE is right for Titania and she just needs to give him the Indian boy and everything will be alright. Now the song does not talk about drugging your crush but that is a little overboard for anyone except for a fairy.
Song 2:
"Happy" by Pharrell Williams
Pharrell Williams - Happy (Despicable Me 2 - Lyric Video)
This song, fits Oberon because in the after he drugs Titania, Oberon is happy because he has found a way for Titania to become his again and give up the little Indian boy, and he has found a lot of fun in making the alternating love quadrilateral thing with Demetrius, Lysander, Hermia, and Helena.
Song 3:
"Someone That Your With", Nickelback
Nickelback-Someone that you're with
This song relates to Oberon because it talks about how there is this girl that he really wants to talk to but he can't because she is already with someone else, but he really really wants to date her but she's with someone else and rejects him when he tries to talk to her. It also talks about how she's so close and yet he still can't talk to her, in the song they live across the hall from each other while in the play, they live in the same forest. The person Titania is already with that Oberon doesn't like, is the little Indian boy even if the relationship Titania has with the little Indian boy isn't boyfriend girlfriend but Oberon is jealous none the less.
Song 4:
"Fireflies", Owl City
Owl City - Fireflies (lyrics)
This song fits the entire play not just Oberon but it still fits Oberon because, with Oberon and Titania and the fairies and magic, nothing is ever quite as it seems/should be. With Oberon and Titania, and their extremely complicated love affair, Oberon kind of breaks up with Titania by making her fall in love with the donkey, Bottom, but at the same time the whole thing is just a ploy to make Titania give up the boy and fall in love with him again so everything will go back to the way it was. This song talks about how nothing is ever as seems. With the fairies nothing is ever as it seems.
Song 5:
"Here Without You", 3 Doors Down
3 Doors Down - Here Without You [Lyrics]
This song fits how Oberon is missing Titania even if he doesn't want to admit it. It talks about how he is somewhere now without her, and he thought it would get better but it didn't. Even when he thought that going away and doing something else for a change would solve the problem, it didn't and now he has to try to find something to do without her there at his side. And because he was the one that pushed her away/ put a magic spell on her there's nothing he can do about it except for wait for her to come back.
Song 6:
"Everything You Want",
Boyce Avenue- Everything You Want Lyrics (Cover of Vertical Horizon)
This song relates to Oberon when Titania is in love with Bottom, because the song is talking about how 'He's everything you want, and everything you need, . . ., but he means nothing to you', and that's how Titania's relationship with Bottom is and it describes perfectly how Oberon feels about it. Bottoms everything you want and need - mainly because I put a love potion on you - but he means nothing to you, because well, he's a donkey and fairy queens don't fall in love with donkeys. The song later goes on to say 'I am everything you want, and everything you need,' and that really summarizes how Oberon feels about Titania.
Song 7:
"The Fun Song", Spongebob
spongebob - FUN song
This song is for in the middle when Oberon is just kind of playing around with Puck and their having a grand time watching as Titania falls for Bottom, and as the weird love quadrilateral-ish thing begins to take shape between Lysander, Demetrius, Helena, and Hermia. Its about how they do stuff together all the time, and that's all they need. They don't need Titania, and watching her do stupid things that they caused, with Bottom is really fun, from their point of view.
Song 8:
"Maybe", Ingrid Michaelson
Ingrid Michaelson - Maybe (Official Music Video)
This song relates to Oberon because he is the one stepping away from Titania, even if it is in an interesting way, just so that he might be able to get her to come back to him. The song talks about how, "I don't want to be the first one to break it but I will if I have to because maybe you'll come back to me.", and this is exactly how Oberon feels about Titania. He feels that if he leaves her with this donkey then she will come back to him, because being in love with a donkey was so terrible.
Song 9:
"Happy Go Lucky Me", Paul Evans
Paul Evans - Happy Go Lucky Me
This song is for when Oberon has finally gotten Titania back because at that point he has everything that he wants or needs, and so he can go back to his normal happy-go-lucky self, which is how he seems to be portrayed in the play. This song doesn't focus as much on the "I got the girl back" bit, but it does cover almost all of Oberon's character as in the beginning and towards the end he just seems to be happy go lucky not really caring about he consequences of his actions again.
Song 10:
"When will I see you again?", Owl City
Owl City - When Can I See You Again? (From Wreck it Ralph)
This song fits Oberon at the end of the song because at that point he has let the 4 lovers go, and has blessed their home and lives, but he still in a way wants to see how things turn out for them, if only for all of the entertainment that they have given them. That is really what this song is about, about how its been fun but now he has to go, but, when can he see them again?
