Have a Great Weekend!

Dear Kennebunk High School Families:

Another week and another snow day. We were smooth sailing for such a long time and then winter hit us hard in February and now March. Hopefully, Tuesday was our last snow day for the year. From here on out if there are future snow days students will be asked to complete work from the snow day bag. Staff will be posting on Google Classroom as well as handing out to students in case there is no power. Our end date for the school year is still June 16th.

Identification:

When entering the building during school hours visitors will be required to scan their license into our Indent-a-Kid software. This is a precaution that all schools are required to abide by.

Chess Club Wins Reserve Championship

This past Saturday the KHS Chess Club trekked up to Lewiston Maine to compete in the Team State Championships for high school chess in Maine. Our group included 10 players split into two teams playing in separate divisions.

Our championship team matched up with the best players in the state and finished an overall 2-2, earning a lot of respect from teams along the way. Matt Durcan went a perfect 4-0 in the championship bracket and Fletcher Crean earned 3.5 points in 4 matches to lead the team. In every match we had strong positions and opportunities to win, with a couple of breaks this team could've easily gone 4-0. Flynn Crean, Xander Pettis, and Nathaniel Scardino all earned points for the team along the way.

Now on to the exciting part!

Our reserve squad competed as well against other high schools and came away with the State Title! They outscored every other team and were able to accumulate enough points to beat John Bapst HS by a single point! To win the title, Elena Pike needed to win her final match on board #1 against the strongest player in the section. Her game went almost two hours as she fought off an aggressive attack and stood her ground. She was able to slowly and surely maneuver her pieces into a coordinated defense which made her position a winning one. It's a game like this that separates good and great players.

Elena Pike went a perfect 4-0 in the tournament. Richard Pocius and Anthony Palmeri both went 3-1. Orie Benezra and David Rush all were able to secure two points in their four matches to become state champions. Congratulations to this group!!

In a moment of crisis, you do not have to be alone.

Sometimes you need a conversation--not an internet search.

Dial 2-1-1 for the Maine Hotline. This service can help with issues like acute crisis, financial assistance, mental health, addiction treatment, health care, or heating and utilities assistance. Additionally, the national Suicide Hotline is 9-8-8. Below is a list of resources.
