MCAS Testing Reminder
Students in grades 3-6 will be taking the Massachusetts Comprehensive Assessment System (MCAS) English Language Arts Test this week. A letter to parents, including the testing schedule, went home with students in grades 3-6 last week. Grades 5 & 6 will be testing on Monday 3/28 and Wednesday 3/30. Grades 3 & 4 will be testing on Tuesday 3/29 and Thursday 3/31.
This year MCAS will include a few PARCC questions and a timed narrative writing section for all grades. Teachers and students have been working hard all year and have recently been working on a test prep unit during Reader’s Workshop to prepare for this assessment. Teachers have worked with students to learn and practice test-taking skills, practice with sample test questions, analyze written responses and build stamina. Students are ready and proud to show what they know.
Please ensure that your child attends school daily during MCAS testing and arrives on time. Being well-rested and prepared with a healthy breakfast is especially important on testing days. It is a well-known fact that students who eat breakfast are more alert and focused. We strongly recommend that your child eat a healthy, hearty breakfast on testing days. Many students choose to do this at home, but parents are reminded that the school cafeteria provides a free, nutritious, tasty breakfast. In addition, please encourage a positive attitude. Be cheerful and encourage your child to be positive about his/her abilities. Remind your child to “do your best.”
The MCAS math and science testing will take place in early May.

Classroom Guidance Lessons
Mrs. Schwab worked with Mrs. Hoegen and her 2nd grade class on March 17, 2016 on the Second Step lesson about focusing and listening. Second Step is a curriculum published by the Committee for Children, Seattle, WA. This curriculum is taught in Pre-K through 2nd grade classrooms in the ARRSD elementary schools. It teaches critical school success skills like listening, focusing, friendship skills, and empathy. Students had fun listening to Mrs. Schwab read a story about how to focus in class. They practiced the skills using movements to learn how to focus (hands in the shape of binoculars over your eyes). They did a turn and talk partnered activity to discuss focusing strategies. Then the class' favorite part, we all sang along and did the accompanying hand movements to the Second Step song, Be A Learner.
that's a big whale!
