6th-grade Enrichment students excavating 15 fossils from a National Geographic kit. This activity gives them a hands-on experience with the processes of archaeology from our text: "Archaeology 101", "Archaeology: Then and Now", and "If Stones Could Speak". Students created a field guide to map out their "dig site" (sharing the kit and defining a dig area for each student in their group). They then carefully locate and dig out the materials from the "site". As their partners dig, they take turns logging this information into their field journals, illustrating their finds, and describing in detail their fossils. They will then create a theory about where their fossils came from and how old they think these remains are. After further research of their fossils, they will publish their research results in the final section of their field guide.
