Mrs. Petersen's Class News
September 2015
Happy September!
I hope that everyone is well and that you are able to enjoy these last few weeks of summer. Fall will be here before we know it!
We have spent the past few weeks getting to know one another and learning our class rules and procedures. We have been working hard on setting high expectations for behavior and the kids have enjoyed cashing in their hard-earned points for fun rewards! Each day, your child will have recorded how many points they have earned for the day. The goal is for your child to earn at least 1 point each day. Please remember to sign your child's planner each day. Positive behavior is KEY to learning!

A Peek At Our Week...
This month we have been working on our baseline reading and math assessments to establish our small reading and math groups. Read on to learn more on what we have been working on...
Reader's Workshop
In Reader's Workshop, we have been working on strengthening our reading skills! We have been reviewing strategies for tackling Tricky Words as well as working with a reading partner! Beginning next week, all of our 2nd graders will be switching classes to better suit their reading needs!
Math Workshop
In math workshop, we have been working on place value. We have been learned that a number's place affects it's value. We have also begun some work with telling time to the hour and half hour. Please continue to practice this at home. Want to practice online? Try this link for a fun game on "Telling Time"!
Writer's Workshop
We LOVE writing! I am so proud of the stories that our class has been working so hard on! We have been writing our own Personal Narratives- small moment stories about something that really happened to us! We have learned ways to hook our readers- by beginning our stories with a question, an action or dialogue! We will soon be working on adding a great ending to our stories as well as publishing our favorite!
Science
In our STEM lab, we have been learning all about sound! We have learned that sound travels and is measured in decibels! Within the next two weeks, we will be working on making our own sound booths!
Social Studies
In Social Studies, we are continuing our work on Communities with a PBL that challenges small groups to create their own Community!
Curriculum Night
Join us Thursday, October 1st for Curriculum Night! 2nd Grade will host an informal opportunity for your child to give you a personalized tour of our classrooms! Students will show you the things that we have been working on and some of the work that they are most proud of! Curriculum Night is from 6:00 until 7:30. In addition to visiting your child's classroom, there will also be informational sessions on the following topics:
- Guidance Program and PBIS
- 3rd Grade Standards-Based Report Cards
- 3rd Grade Read to Achieve Legislation
- School Improvement Plan and Parent Involvement Compact
Fall Festival
We hope to see you October 10th for our Fall Festival! Fall Festival will be open from 11:00 am until 4:00pm. Join us for some fun Fall Games and Activities!
Donations Needed
For our Fall Festival, we are in need of a few items...
-2nd Grade's activity for the Fall Festival is Guessing Jars! We are in need of jars of any size filled with an item! (For example; A mason jar filled with candy corn.) Please label the jar with the amount of each item inside. This could be a great counting-practice activity for your children!
-Each grade level is in charge of creating a basket to be auctioned. Our basket's theme is "A Good Book"! We are in need of donations for our basket. Donations might include books, gift cards to book stores, book marks, book lights, etc.
Any donations are greatly appreciated! Thank you in advance for all of your help and support!
