Literacy:
Literacy
We are going to wrap up our Heroes and Helpers unit by exploring the question, “How can stories be alike and different?” First, we will read the fantasy story Dex: The Heart of a Hero, about a dog who becomes a superhero! We will also learn about some real heroes in the informational text Heroes Then and Now. We will think of ways that we can be heroes in our lives!
Target Vocabulary: depended, overlooked, sprang, studied, gazing, hero, exercise, sore
Phonics Skills: Words with r-controlled vowels or (for), ore (bore)
Spelling Words: report, short, morning, force, story, forget, score, for, store, fork, tore, shore, laugh, ground, ready **support
Vocabulary Strategy: Prefix over- (means “above” or “beyond”)
Comprehension Skill: Compare and contrast – tell how two things are alike or not

Writing
We will continue our lessons in Narrative writing. We are learning the recipe to writing a main event:
Cooking Up and Main Event
Blend these ingredients:

• Description Main character’s thoughts and feelings
Ask yourself:
• What does the character hear, see, feel think?
• What does the character say?
• What does it look like?
• What is the character’s reaction?
• What is the solution?
We will practice this "recipe" to cooking up a main event this week!

Social Studies and Science
We will prepare and practice for the Fairness Assembly on Friday.
Science:
We will begin the next Science Unit, Rocks and Minerals this week. In the first lesson, students will begin their geologist training, they will write their own ideas regarding rocks. Then students will explore three rocks and draw and write about the rocks' properties. They will compare the three rocks, this will help them to prepare for an exploration of 12 rock samples.
