Youth Mental Health First Aid

2020-2021 VIRTUAL Agency Wide Training


Due to COVID restrictions, Prairie Lakes AEA will offer agency wide Youth Mental Health First Aid trainings virtually for the remainder of 2020. Spring 2021 training dates have been secured but whether they will be offered virtually or in person will be determined at a later date.

This training course is designed to teach adults how to help an adolescent who is experiencing a mental health or addictions challenge or is in crisis. Youth Mental Health First Aid is primarily designed for adults who regularly interact with young people.

The virtual training format includes 2 hours of self paced training prior to attending the virtual training on the dates listed below. The virtual training will be held via zoom from 10-3:30 with a 1/2 hour lunch break. Class is limited to 20 participants.

The charge for the virtual training is $23.95. Your school will be invoiced at the conclusion of the training or a PO can be sent to In person training (possibly in 2021) are free.

This training also meets the Iowa legislation requirement of one hour of suicide prevention training for school districts.

How Youth Mental Health First Aid Can Help

  • Informs adults about common mental health concerns among youth
  • Reduces stigma
  • Teaches adults how to recognize signs and symptoms of mental health problems in youth
  • Teaches a 5 step action plan to help youth who may be facing a mental health problem or crisis

If you would like to offer YMHFA to your school staff as a group, email with available dates and times. Staff trainings in your school district are still offered in person and are free.
