HAZARD RECOGNITION - PART 2

Recognizing hazards in the workplace is an essential part of EVERYONE’S job. Here are some ideas of things to look for in your classroom or assigned work area.

ELECTRICAL CORD AND OUTLET HAZARDS

  • Electrical cords attached to building surfaces (hanging on nails or pipes, stapled, etc.)
  • Frayed, cut, nicked, or damaged cords

  • Cords running across walkways

  • Overloaded outlets

  • Extension cords used as permanent wiring (used more than 1 day)

  • Missing ground pin (either cut off or only a 2 pronged cord)

  • Missing or broken outlet cover

FIRE HAZARDS

  • Items blocking access to fire extinguishers and emergency exits (doors or windows) or stored within 3 feet of an electrical panel
  • Exit doors that do not open easily

  • Decorative items hanging from fire sprinkler pipes or ceiling lights

  • Combustible materials stored in halls/passageways/etc.

  • Burned out Emergency Lights and EXIT signs

STORAGE HAZARDS

  • Liquids or heavy materials stored overhead
  • Materials stored within 2 feet of ceilings, 18 inches of sprinklers, or 3 feet of heater/heat source

  • Stacks of supplies that lean, could be pulled over onto a student, or topple during an earthquake

HAZARDOUS SUBSTANCES

  • Chemical containers not labeled with name of product and hazard
  • Flammable chemicals stored outside flammable cabinet

  • Acids and bases, and other incompatible chemicals, stored adjacent to each other

  • Compressed gas cylinders not capped and secured (with a chain or other device)

  • Access to emergency washing station blocked by equipment, supplies or closed door

MISCELLANEOUS HAZARDS

  • Burned out or missing light bulbs
  • Light bulbs not covered with sheath or cover

  • Sharp edges, spurs, splinters, protruding nails, etc. on furniture

  • Slip or trip hazards caused by poor housekeeping, clutter, loose carpeting, slick areas, broken concrete, etc.

  • Damaged or worn personal protective equipment (PPE)

REMEMBER, IF YOU SPOT A HAZARD, TAKE ACTION — FIX IT OR REPORT IT!
