Oak Harbor High School Choirs Invited to Perform Handel’s Messiah in New York City’s Carnegie Hall
The Oak Harbor High School Choirs have been invited to participate in a performance of Handel’s Messiah on the DCINY Concert Series in New York City. This performance in Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall on Sunday, November 26, 2017 is of the Thomas Beecham/Eugene Goossens’ 1959 Re-Orchestration for Full Symphony Orchestra. These outstanding musicians will join with other choristers to form the Distinguished Concerts Singers International, a choir of distinction. Conductor Dr. Jonathan Griffith will lead the performance and will serve as the clinician for the residency.
Dr. Jonathan Griffith, Artistic Director and Principal Conductor for DCINY states: “The Oak Harbor High School Choirs received this invitation because of the quality and high level of musicianship demonstrated by the singers. It is quite an honor just to be invited to perform in New York. These wonderful musicians not only represent a high quality of music and education, but they also become ambassadors for the entire community. This is an event of extreme pride for everybody and deserving of the community’s recognition and support.” The singers will spend 5 days and 4 nights in New York City in preparation for their concert. “The singers will spend approximately 9- 10 hours in rehearsals over the 5 day residency.” says Griffith. “Not all of the time is spent in rehearsals, since there is so much history and culture to see in New York City. However, the performance is the primary purpose for their visit to the city.” Members of the community are encouraged to give financial support in sending these singers to New York by contacting Russell Raber via email at rraber@bcssd.com.

This week B-C-S is featuring, 7th Grade teacher, Tisha Augustyniak
1. What grade do you teach and how long have you been teaching for B-C-S Schools?
- I have been teaching 22 years in the B-C-S School District. I have taught first, second, third and seventh grades during my years in the district.
2. Are you involved with any special projects so far this year?
- We just finished a successful Book Fair to raise money for the seventh grade students and the School Bucks Auction. The Book Fair also gave the students access to buy some great new books. My Rocket Readers Club group is currently working on creating an inviting reading space called "Starbooks" in the 7th grade wing. We are collecting book donations, organizing the books, labeling them by genres, painting the logo and the walls in the space, and trying to get donations of bookshelves and furniture. Our hope is that 7th graders come to this space to borrow books, to read, and to discuss books.
3. What do you enjoy most about being a teacher at Oak Harbor Middle School?
- My 7th grade team of teachers are pretty special. They are very passionate about the role they have in not only providing education to 7th graders, but also preparing them for high school and beyond. They inspire me each and every day. Of course, I love the age of these 7th graders. They are so interesting, and are maturing and coming to know themselves better on a daily basis.
4. What is your favorite book of all time and what book would you recommend to your students?
- Choosing my favorite book of all time is a difficult choice for me to make. As readers, we know that books can affect us and linger with us for many reasons and for the connections we make to them. The Good Earth by Pearl Buck is a favorite of mine. It speaks to the connection to the land. This connection is associated with respect, strong work ethic, and good sense. The books I would recommend to 7th graders are the ones we teach during the school year. The 7th graders read The Lightning Thief, Long Walk To Water, and Lyddie. Each of these books have teenage characters that overcome obstacles and challenges in coming to age and discovering themselves, that the 7th graders can relate to and look to for inspiration.
5. What is something unique about you?
- I love nature and I'm a runner. I run more to be outside in nature, than for the act of running itself. However, I do a lot of problem solving and lesson planning on my long runs.
