February 19-23
Dear Families,
There will be no school on Monday, February 19, in honor of the President's Day holiday. Our next early release will be Friday, March 1. The end of the third grading quarter will be Friday, March 8. There will be no school that day to provide Staff Professional Development. Spring Break is March 11-15. We will return to the fourth and final academic quarter Monday, March 18.
Remind your students to charge their chromebooks and turn in their assignments. Let's finish this academic year strong!

ALGEBRA/GEOMETRY NEWS
Algebra students worked in Module 7 "Systems of Linear Equations and Inequalities" this week. There will be a quiz on Lessons 7-1 to 7-4 this coming Friday, Feb. 23.
Geometry students completed Module 7 "Quadrilaterals" this week. We will review and take the Vocab Quiz and Test in the coming week.

ELA 8 NEWS
Next week we will present our poetry projects. Students were asked to select a poem (or a song) to analyze using our poetry analysis chart. The quarter will end on Friday, March 8, please remind your student to continue turning in their work on time and to advocate for themselves if they are confused or need more time to complete an assignment!

This week in science, we started covering Evolution and Natural Selection and will continue on next week.
Please make sure your child turned in their Genetic Technology Poster. The last day I will accept posters will be Friday, February 23rd. The assignment is marked as missing on Skyward if your child did not turn in a poster.

BROADCAST & PLTW NEWS
Magic of Electrons -Magic of Electrons will be taking Lesson 1 What is Electricity Assessment on Tuesday. The review has been posted on the Google classroom. We will be covering Lesson 2.1 Circuit design.
Broadcast Tech -We’ll be continuing to produce the Patton Roar. Watch the Patton Roar here. The students will learn about the B-Roll and editing their Angles Away project using I-Movie.
PLTW Design & Modeling (DM): This week students created box and whisker plots to represent the data from our skimmer trials. We discussed statistical concepts such as center and spread. Students were asked to use spreadsheet software to organize, analyze and store the data. Next week, students will be introduced to a new measuring tool called a dial caliper. This tool is useful for measuring 3D objects and adding dimensions to sketches. Students will learn how to read a dial caliper and practice measuring next week before adding these measurements to sketches.
PLTW Automation & Robotics (AR): Students spent this week building with bevel gears. After building a prototype for a reach-and-look device, students worked on design a wind turbine using bevel gears and gear trains. Next week, we will continue our wind turbine construction before moving onto designing a fidget toy and building a worm-and-wheel mechanism.

MEDICAL DETECTIVES/GREEN ARCHITECTURE NEWS
Green Architecture: Students have completed the Autodesk Revit computerized scale model of their bedroom with furniture. See the attached pictures of some examples!
Medical Detectives: Students have started the process of diagnosing fictional patients using the disease dictionary. Students have 15 different medical conditions in the disease dictionary. Students are learning the importance of asking good questions! Ask your son/daughter about diagnosing a patient!

DRAMA NEWS
Drama 8/9 –The show dates are set as we anticipate the upcoming Dr. Seuss performances. The cast will perform a daytime show for each elementary school. Then, on March 6th, the show comes to primetime with a 7:00 performance for families and friends.

SPANISH 1 NEWS
4A in Savvas
1st, 3rd, 4th & 7th Hours: Los Pasatiempos is the name of this chapter. We are working on stating locations, using the verb “ir” (to go) and continuing to build structures while using question words correctly.
8th Hour: Recuerdos del pasado y Cuando éramos niños
We are learning to use the imperfect verb tense while building our vocabulary and using indirect object pronouns correctly.
Each of these classes have two Señor Wooly videos assignments (nuggets 1-6 each )to go before this quarter ends on March 8th: “Diego y Sus Amigos” & “El Antídoto del Dragón.”
NOTE: Please remind your son or daughter to stay up to date on his or her work for Spanish. There will be no extensions given for missing work.

FACS AND ENERGY & THE ENVIRONMENT NEWS
In Foods and Nutrition, we just finished up our Kitchen Sanitation unit and are moving on to our Kitchen Safety unit.
In Energy and the Environment, we are exploring energy usage and how to reduce energy usage in our homes. Next, we will dive deeper into wind energy which will lead us to the Wind Turbine Project!
Foods and Nutrition II: We have made our way into the kitchen here at PJHS! The kids completed their first lab making microwave monkey bread and did a great job! We are going to be continuing on in Unit 2: Kitchen Skills & Applications for the next several weeks. As we continue through this unit, we will focus on proper measuring techniques, cooking applications, converting recipes, and knife skills. ART NEWS
All artists have been developing their entries for the Doodle for Google contest. The theme is “My Wish for the Next 25 Years,” and students are coming up with some hopeful and exciting ideas. We will be starting our spring clay projects shortly.
Please be sure to congratulate sixth grade artists Harper Woolford and Gracie Highsmith. They are winners in the University of St. Mary’s 2024 Abraham Lincoln Portrait Contest for Best Portrait and Most Original Portrait. Over 200 artworks from area schools were entered into the contest.

PE NEWS
All is well in PE. Next week, we will be finishing our Gaga Ball unit, as well as, continued work in the weight room. Our students have really enjoyed playing Gaga Ball as a traditional throwback game. 9th grade students will resume their health unit next week as well.
*We will look to go outside as much as possible for PE (weather permitting). Please help us in reminding our students to bring water bottles and tennis shoes every day they have PE.

ESOL NEWS
We have completed our study of paragraph writing. Students have a good understanding of how to write an essay using a structure. This week we will begin a novel study. Students will read Because of Winn Dixie.
