The Space Race through the 50's
The Soviet Union launches Sputnik 1, the first ever satellite into outer space. On November 3 of the same year, the Soviet Union launches Sputnik 2 with a dog in it named Laika. Explorer 1, the first American satellite to reach orbit, is launched. It carried scientific equipment that lead to the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belt. October 1, 1958, NASA is formed and replaces NACA.
The Space Race through the 60's
Tiros the 1st successful weather satellite is launched. December 7, 1961, NASA announces the Gemini program. July 20, 1969, Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin become the first men to walk on the Moon while crewmate Michael Collins orbits around the Moon alone.
