We hope you have a wonderful summer, and we cannot wait to have our classrooms filled with enthusiastic students again in September! Lakeview is a special place because of the people that fill our building - students, families, and staff. Thank you all!

New Schedule for Specials Classes Next Year

For years, your students have been used to having music, art, PE, and library on a set day of the week (for example, art might have been every Tuesday). This caused an uneven number of classes, depending on the specials schedule for each individual classroom. For example, classrooms that had art on Monday or Friday had far fewer art classes than classrooms that had art on Wednesdays, due to holidays and Professional Development days. We have fixed this for next year with a new schedule at all four elementary schools, but it is going to take time for all of us to get used to it.

Next year, students will have specials on a 4-day rotation, without regard to the day of the week. Therefore, a class may have art on "Day 1" but day 1 could really be any calendar day of the week. We will count Day 1, Day 2, Day 3, Day 4, and then start over with Day 1 again (see the schedule example of September for a visual explanation). This is similar to a middle school or high school rotation schedule.

This means that all classrooms will have an equal number of art, music, PE, and library classes over the course of the school year (about 44 hours of each) and will have more of each special as well. Over the course of a school year, there will be approximately 7 additional hours of each special as compared to the current schedule.

As a parent, the hardest part might be gym shoes ... it's easy to remember gym shoes using our current schedule, but since our new rotation schedule will put gym on any day of the week, I have two suggestions:

1. Keep a pair of gym shoes in your child's locker,

2. Wear gym shoes to school every day (really, there's no reason a student needs to wear anything but gym shoes to school every day).

We are excited to offer this for our students - let us know if you have any questions.

Not returning to Lakeview next year?

Please call or email the office to let us know - it truly helps our planning!

5th Grade Chromebook Collection

5th grade families - Please be sure you have all Chromebook components ready to return to school. Chromebook collection will be on Tuesday, June 11th. Be sure charging cords and bags are all returned with the Chromebook. Please fully charge the Chromebook before returning it on the 11th - it helps with updates that are performed over summer vacation. Students that fail to return items will have charges placed on their Powerschool account. Be sure your charging cord is returned, because that is the item that is most frequently forgotten. Your student will bring the empty Chromebook case home to wash in the laundry and return to school in 6th grade, along with washing instructions.

Summer School

• The first day of Summer School is on Tuesday, June 25.

• There is no Summer School on July 4th.

• The last day of Summer School is July 31.

Summer School is Monday through Thursday at the high school. All student drop off and pickup is at the gym doors. Doors open at 7:55 a.m. and the first class starts at 8:00 a.m. If your child has signed up for four hours of classes, they are done at noon and must be picked up promptly. If students start later than 8:00 or are done before noon, they may not wait at the high school - students may only be in the building for the times when they are enrolled in a class.

Please note: There are absolutely no registrations being accepted for Summer School at this time and there will not be any registrations taken in person at Summer School. Registrations were due on May 3rd.

Read, Read, Read!

Last week's newsletter stressed the importance of daily reading this Summer. There is a program in Wisconsin called Battle of the Books. Lakeview is considering participating in this event next school year in grades 4 and 5 (we could really use a 4th or 5th grade parent coordinator to make this happen - I promise it is not difficult). Here is a link to the book list. You can find all of these in the public library system. You will see that there is a variety of books listed - all of which are great to read and re-read this Summer! Many books are good for younger learners as well. You can learn more about the program itself at this link.

Will you have a child in 5K next year?

We will have a back-to-school event just for incoming 5K families. Please mark your calendar for "Popsicles on the Playground". This will be a chance for 5K students to play together on our playground while parents and families have a chance to meet our 5K teachers and each other before school starts. Here is a link to the flyer. We will send another invite closer to the date to remind you! The date is August 13th from 4-5 p.m.

4K Registration for 2019-2020 is open

Do you have a younger student who will be in 4K next year? Do you have a neighbor, friend, or family member that will be in 4K next year? Registration for South Milwaukee's 4K program is now open for the 2019-2020 school year. Here is a link to the flyer with information - feel free to share this link. The most important thing to do is register soon by completing the online information and then bringing the required documents to the school office.
