Keniya Stills
School: Carver Early College
Grade: 12th
College Choice: Atlanta Area Technical College
Keniya Stills is a first time High school graduate in her family. Keniya is a humble dually enrolled student at Atlanta Area Technical College. This did not come easy for her! She is a Target 2021 student and has had many academic challenges along the way. Keniya admits that she came to high school unprepared for success and did not take it seriously. Her family has had a long line of members who did not graduate high school. Except for one cousin, along with herself, would she make a claim to that success. She credits her success to her teachers and supporters from the T2021 program which includes a whole team of: student support coach, site lead, and her courageous PCG tutors. Keniya stated vehemently that had it not been for her school support system, she would not see the future that she is now planning for! Keniya Stills sees herself graduating from college in a few years with a degree in the field of Healthcare.

A Day in the Life of a Student Support Coach

What was your motivation for becoming a Student Support Coach?
When I was a senior in college, I did an internship with Communities In Schools of Cobb County/Marietta and noticed how important that “caring adult” is to a student’s confidence and trust in their abilities when it comes to school. I worked with a lot of children who just didn't have the confidence of thinking they can do school, or succeed so they just stopped trying. I loved the mission of Communities in Schools, “To surround students with a community of support, empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.” I knew that I wanted to be a part of something that gives that confidence to students. If circumstances arise, I want the students to know that there is a caring adult that is there to support them and build that confidence so that in the future they are able to continue to pursue success on their own.
The most rewarding part of being a student support coach has been when the students seek me out to help them. This shows that they trust me enough to receive support rather than just give up trying. I always tell them all they have to do is ask and we can figure it out! But, if I don’t know what is going on I can’t help.
The best lesson I have learned from my students is how to be resilient and caring even when life is hard. They are the strongest people I know and yet they care for others. They check in on me saying “just checking in Ms. Penn” and it always makes my day.
I hope they learn that they can trust themselves and dream for more even when they feel they can’t. I tell them, “Only you can tell you who you are, nobody has the power to tell you otherwise. And you want to be this so go do it.” Confidence and determination can go a long way in life and I hope they remember this when things and people threaten to take their confidence away.
Describe your typical “Target 2021” day?
A typical day would consist of checking attendance with my students who have chronic absences the first hour of school and communicating with parents if need be. Then something usually comes up with a student and my day looks different than planned depending on the student. One student may come in to see if they have any points from my incentive program, another may need to just talk things out about something that happened over the weekend or another may need help doing a project. It just depends.
