1. Nature really is the best art
I can only sympathise with so many on the recent lockdown measures and subsequent implications these may have. It appears we are not YET through the woods, however, this week has proved that, as a community, we have resilience in abundance. We've received messages of support form governors, The Tilian Partnership, parents and members of the community. This is amazing because one of our 6 Bardwell Behaviours is being 'Resilient.'
A few changes have had to take shape and I am saddened to reiterate that our breakfast club offer has now reduced to 2 mornings of the week due to Mrs Webber being at home. Thankfully, we have managed to continue our after-school provision so there will be no changes, here. Although we may have suffered a few staff changes, I am confident that the wonderful staff and community of Bardwell will adapt and continue to support us to ensure that our children get the first class education we all work so hard to achieve.
And, on that note, I am so proud and inspired to share this newsletter with you in order to showcase the successes of the current week. Most notably, our outdoor classroom day, which was an unbelievable success! Outdoor Classroom Day is a global campaign, which serves to enlighten us that spending time outdoors is AS important for children's development as learning to read and write. At Bardwell, we are certainly trying to carry this torch and we all firmly believe that learning outside of the classroom engages and excites children in spectacular ways; part of our mission is to, therefore, educate everyone that outdoor play is the key to improving children's health, wellbeing and happiness.
On 5th November 2020, every child and adult immersed themselves in the forest, front garden and our newly converted portacabin...'The Green Room'. Children worked, inquisitively, in teams to learn about the beauty and power of nature. Building fires, bug hunting, shelter building and working on a vertical class challenge of making a bug hotel were all examples of the skills and knowledge-based curriculum day. However, as if often the case, there were so many more learning opportunities and experiences that evolved and developed as the day unfolded. In particular, the continual weaving of the Bardwell Behaviours...or lifelong learning skills of being 'inquisitive', 'resilient', 'courageous', 'kind communicating', 'aspirational', and 'reflective'. Some say these are examples of the 'hidden curriculum.' If this is the case, we are certainly advocates of uncovering this curriculum because it is the key driver to empowering our young people to create a fulfilling, happy, and better world!
Mahatma Gandhi once said: 'Be the change you want to see in the world.' My message to the Bardwell children is: 'What an unbelievable change you have made!
I must take this opportunity to thank Mr Hurkett and Mrs Webber, in particular, as they were the champions of this truly memorable day!
So, whilst we're not out of the woods, we're definitely taking solace from the woods and developing a incredible affinity for what's around us and what's dear to us! Speaking to the children, you would never know that we are currently navigating a very difficult world! Numerous quotes, from the day, quite clearly confirmed this...'This is the best day ever!' (Year 2 pupil). 'I love PE and Forest School at this school!' (Year 4 pupil). 'I want to stay here forever!' (Year 5 pupil).
Have a lovely weekend and get the kids outdoors.

2. Rowan's Adventures...
It’s been a very outdoorsy kind of week. As well as taking part in our Outdoor Learning Day with fires, hotdogs and den building, Rowan Class took to the streets of Bardwell for a geography field trip. We investigated different buildings around the village and observed the kinds of materials that they are made from. We were amazed to find that the church has ramparts and turrets just like a castle!

3. Hazel's Exploits...
What a busy week we’ve had! The children have been working incredibly hard. We have now started our next narrative, ‘The Owl who was Afraid of the Dark’. We have learnt all about barn owls and written some fantastic sentences including speech. In maths, we have been consolidating our learning on column addition and subtraction. Next week we will begin learning about multiplication and division. In RE we are now studying Islam and in PSHE we are looking at one of our learning behaviour cogs ‘courageous’ and understanding what it means to have a growth mindset. The children had a wonderful day on Thursday, celebrating outdoor learning day! They learnt how to start a fire, toasted marshmallows and enjoyed a delicious hot chocolate around the fire. Then we went outside in to forest school and collected materials to make a bug hotel. Lastly, the class made a shelter. We all thoroughly enjoyed the day!

Oak Class say thankyou to Mr Francksen and Mr Hurkett (with a beautiful card) for making their Green Room come alive. They get covered in leaves in the process!

6. Outdoor Learning Day - Thursday 5th November 2020

7. Breakfast Club - Mondays and Tuesdays during lockdown
Unfortunately, we are not able to offer Breakfast Club on a Monday or Tuesday over the next few weeks. This is due to reduced staffing as we have a member of staff working from home during the lockdown period. Wednesday and Thursday Breakfast Club sessions will continue as normal. We apologise for any inconvenience this will cause.
Thank you for your understanding.
8. Covid-19 Symptoms Reminder
We’d like to remind you of this section within our Risk Assessment.
Ensure all staff and parents understand the NHS Test and Trace process and know that they need to:
- Book a test if they are displaying symptoms;
Provide details of anyone they have been in close contact with if they were to test positive for coronavirus (COVID-19) or if asked by NHS Test & Trace;
- Self-isolate if they have been in close contact with someone who develops coronavirus (COVID-19) symptoms or someone who tests positive for Coronavirus (COVID-19).
9. Layers/uniform
As you are aware, our Risk Assessment states that windows and doors are kept open for ventilation where possible. As the weather changes, this means that some pupils are likely to be feeling the cold, so please ensure your child has layers to put on and take off. We recommend that all children wear a vest, school polo shirt and jumper/sweatshirt, and that they bring in an additional warm layer to put on, as well as always having their outdoor coat with them.
10. School Photographs
Our school photographer, Spencer Brown, was due to visit the school on 20th November for individual pupil photographs. He has advised us that this is no longer going to be possible due to the lockdown and, due to other circumstances beyond his control, he is unable to offer us a photography service this year.
We have therefore sought an alternative, and have booked a local agent from Tempest Photography, who will be in on Thursday 3rd December. We hope that this means items ordered are delivered in time for Christmas.
11. Christmas Lunch - Reminder
Our annual Christmas lunch will be on Monday 14th December - a traditional turkey (or veggie alternative) dinner with all the trimmings, followed by a favourite dessert. On this day, we will cater for all children at the school to have a hot school lunch unless we hear otherwise from you by Monday 30th November. This means that if you pay for school lunches your child will be catered for and you will be charged for lunch on this day. Children on Free School Meals (all those in YR, Y1 and Y2, plus those on income related FSM) do not pay.
Happily, this coincides with Save The Children’s Christmas jumper day so children (& staff!) are invited to wear a Christmas top instead of their school jumper or sweatshirt that day. Please ensure your child brings a monetary donation (£1 suggested) for Save The Children.
If you have any outgrown Christmas jumpers that you’d like to donate to the PTA’s stockpile, which can be shared with families that need one, please drop these off at the office.
12. School Packed Lunches - save some money!
We are pleased that more than half of our pupils regularly opt for school lunch at Bardwell and we’d like to remind you that a school packed lunch is an option, instead of our hot food menu. This is particularly beneficial for those who are making home packed lunches for children on Universal Infant Free School Meals (those in YR, Y1 and Y2). If your child would like a School Packed Lunch they just need to let their teacher know at registration.
The school packed lunch consists of a filled roll, a savoury snack, fruit, dessert and an apple drink.
We can also offer pupils sausages on Fridays instead of the fish option - please contact the office staff if your child would like this.
13. Parent/carer consultations
Please click on your child's class link and complete the form.
NB: We will not make an appointment for you if we do not receive a response.
