By Juliette Miller
When it comes to education and attending school, every minute matters. It is important for students to arrive to school and class on time and be present each day. Classes at Stoughton High School begin promptly at 7:35 am. Therefore, students should aim to arrive to school no later than 7:25 am in order to make it to their first period class on time. Being tardy to school and class has consequences, but more importantly when students are late valuable instructional time is lost. Overtime these minutes add up and students may fall behind.
During summer vacation, students likely have had the opportunity to sleep in or stay up later. They have gotten out of the habit of being up and ready for school and have gotten out of their regular routines. That's why it is good to start to re-establish these routines and typical school sleep schedules now. Starting now will help students be better prepared for that first week of school when they must be up and ready early.
You may find some useful tips and tricks in the article "How to Get Used to Waking up Early for School". Establishing healthy bedtime and morning routines, as well as, starting to reestablish typical school day routines now will help you and your student have a better first couple days/weeks back to school.
We are looking forward to seeing you on September 6th and working with each of you throughout the school year!
Spotlight: New Staff
Administration
Ms. Hilary Filkins
Hilary Filkins was an ELA teacher at Brockton High School for over 15 years before transitioning into a leadership role at the Edmond P. Talbot Middle School in Fall River, where she served for almost two years as Humanities Department Chair. While at Talbot, Hilary received a fellowship for Boston College's Lynch Leadership Academy. As a fellow in LLA, she set foot in the charter landscape for one year before re-entering the public sector as the newest Assistant Principal at SHS. Hilary is thrilled to be a part of the community and is busy hitting the ground learning using a student-centered approach.
Mr. Robin Ireland
Coming from Paisley, Scotland, Robin Ireland has spent the past 20 years coaching sports at a variety of levels including 16 of those as the Varsity Girls Soccer Coach at Apponequet High School in Lakeville. During this time, Robin was also a physical education teacher teaching in both Needham and Lakeville. He has three wonderful boys who are spread across university, high and middle school. When he is not playing taxi dad to his children, he is often trying to keep himself in shape by running and riding his bike. Robin's focus for the SHS athletic department, is to make it accessible for all of our students, including our middle school students through a middle school sports program, and expanding the athletic program to include a unified sports program, which joins students with and without intellectual disabilities on the same team.
Ms. Rachelle Russo
Rachelle Russo is excited to join the SHS family and come to Stoughton with two master's degrees in education and 18 years of experience. Her journey started in a New Bedford middle school where she taught 6th grade and 8th grade students for 9 years before moving to an elementary school as an ELA Department Head. After two years in elementary school, she returned to New Bedford as an assistant principal in one of the middle schools and was there for the past 7 1/2 years. She is a mother of four and is passionate about education for all students. Rachelle looks forward to meeting everyone and having an amazing year!
