WinterKids Winter Games 2024
We are so excited to be selected as the Penobscot County representative for the 2024 WinterKids Winter Games!
WinterKids is a nonprofit organization based in Maine that provides children with opportunities to stay active, healthy, and learn outdoors during the winter months. Since its establishment in 1997, WinterKids has been dedicated to ensuring that hundreds of thousands of children embrace the joy of outdoor winter activities while reaping the numerous physical and mental health benefits they provide.
Through innovative programs, including the WinterKids App, WinterKids Winter Games, Welcome to Winter, License to Chill, WinterKids StoryWalk & Snowshoe Loan Program, WinterKids Learn Outside Guide, WinterKids Peisner Nordic Fund, Mountain Mayhem, WinterKids Downhill 24, and D24 Outdoor Fund, WinterKids helps children develop healthy lifelong habits through fun, outdoor winter activity.
We have a number of activities planned throughout the next four weeks to engage students in outdoor play, health and fitness. There are also many opportunities for families to join the fun!
Week 1: Physical Fitness Family Opportunities
The theme of this week is to get outside and get physical! As a school, students will participate in making snow angels outside (if the snow cooperates) and taking their learning outside. Science classes will examine items in nature under a magnifying glass.
How can your family play along? Get outside and play! Take pictures of your outdoor fun and send them to melissa.davis@schools.hermon.net or send them to our facebook page Hermon Elementary School-HES. We will post the photos of families getting outside and enjoying the Maine winter weather.
Another way to participate is to have your child complete the snack badge option for week 1. It can be found on this link: https://hannafordsnackpals.com/winterkids-23/
Week 2: Nutrition
The theme of this week is nutrition! Students will learn about how to fuel our bodies with healthy foods over the winter months. They will learn about vitamin D and its importance during the winter months.
How can your family play along: Get cooking! Take pictures of your family cooking healthy foods and send them to melissa.davis@schools.hermon.net or to our facebook page. We will post the photos of families cooking healthy foods together!

Week 3: Family Engagement
This week is all about family engagement and fun!
How can your family play along? Your child's teacher will be sending home a BINGO board for families to work on this week. See if you can complete a row--or if you're really motivated---go for a board blackout. We are also hosting a "Learn to Snowshoe" event at the Duran School on January 24th from 4:30-6:30. Please bring the whole family--enjoy some hot chocolate and learn how to snowshoe! We hope to see you there!
Please remember to take pictures of your outdoor fun and send them to melissa.davis@schools.hermon.net or send them to our facebook page Hermon Elementary School-HES. We will post the photos of families getting outside and enjoying the Maine winter weather.

Week 4: Winter Carnival
The theme of this week is Winter Carnival! Our amazing PE teacher is creating a Winter Carnival during PE class for our students. This outdoor experience will be fun for all.
