From the Desk of the Principal
I hope this week’s Lisbon Lines finds each of you and your families healthy and safe. The entire Lisbon Elementary staff misses each and every one of our students and can’t wait until we see all of you and your families at next week’s virtual Family Orientations.
This week, students will receive access to Lexia® Core5®, the Reading eLearning tool we will use during the school closure. Lexia® Core5® is an adaptive, engaging computer-based learning program. The activities in Lexia® Core5® support and build on reading standards and focus on developing reading skills in six areas: phonological awareness, phonics, structural analysis, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension. Teachers will provide information access to students and families via Canvas. Students should explore Lexia® Core5® throughout the week.
Lisbon will host virtual Family Orientation meetings via Google Meet to provide more information on distance learning schedules and expectations as indicated in the following schedule. Families should plan to attend one session. School teams will provide an orientation video for families who are unable to attend a live orientation session.
Stay Healthy and Safe,
Mrs. Anoff & Ms. Wright

Google Classroom Sessions
We are excited about beginning Google Check In sessions next week. Please make sure your child signs into their sessions through their teacher's Canvas page. Teachers have been advised not to allow anyone to enter the Check In Session from a private email address, this is for everyone's safety and security. My expectation is that students will be on their best behavior during screen time with their classmates and teacher(s). Please be advised that if any student does anything inappropriate during a class session, then the teacher may eliminate the student from instruction. Further violations will result in a phone call to parents from an administrator. We are hopeful that everyone will take advantage of this learning time.

New Chromebook Requests
If you requested a Chromebook already, those computers have been shipped and should have already arrived.
Here are the new procedures to request a Chromebook:
- Parent logs in to HCPSS Connect (https://www.hcpss.org/connect/)
- From the left menu, the last choice, click on “Student Technology”, then choose “Student Technology” near the top center of the screen
- On the HCPSS Student Technology screen, use the drop-down arrows to indicate the Technology Requested for each student. Changes are saved immediately.
- If a device has already been issued, it will appear in the inventory list.
- The request list will be synced with the distribution team by 8:00 a.m. every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday and devices will be shipped shortly thereafter. If a student already has a device issued, the request will not be processed.
Student Device Distribution
Devices will be packaged and mailed or delivered by HCPSS staff to families of elementary and middle school students who have requested to borrow them, as well as any high school students who have not yet received a requested device. We are working to ensure that as many students as possible receive their devices in time for the start of Distance Learning instruction. If delivery delays do occur, teachers will be informed and will be flexible with students during the initial days without a device. Families who will receive devices via mail will be notified by HCPSS Technology Staff prior to delivery and provided additional details regarding the shipment.
Parents/guardians who completed the Student Service Survey and have had a change in needs should follow the procedures in the section labeled “New Chromebook Requests”
HCPSS will continue to adapt to this evolving situation and appreciates the continued patience of families and staff as we work to implement a thoughtful approach to Distance Learning.
2020-21 School Enrollment
Registration of all new students for next school year Grades PK - Grade 5, should be started online. Please use the following link:
GT Support During Virtual Learning
As part of the elementary distance learning that will begin in the next few weeks, Gifted and Talented Resource teachers will provide optional weekly enrichment activities in which students may engage in lieu of current Curriculum Extension Units (CEU) and Instructional Seminars. In addition, they will continue to provide instruction for students currently in GT Math. We look forward to resuming regular CEU and Seminar instruction in the future.
GT Placement Decisions-Timelines
As a result of the decision of Maryland State Superintendent, Dr. Karen Salmon, that all state schools will remain closed until April 24 in response to the coronavirus COVID-19 pandemic, we have shifted several dates related to GT Placement:
- Families of 3rd grade students who wish to submit a request for a placement review for 4th grade GT Math should email our G/T Resource teacher, Jodi O’Connor at Jodi_Oconnor@hcpss.org with this request by April 15. Staff will conduct the review and communicate with families by May 1.
- Students who were absent for CogAT testing in December or have entered HCPSS since that time will have an opportunity to take CogAT for potential GT Placement this summer rather than the previously communicated date of May 2. New dates will be determined as soon as possible and communicated to the school community. Students who missed testing will automatically receive an invitation to testing once the dates are finalized.
Parents of students that have tested in or have been placed into GT Math can email Jodi_Oconnor@hcpss.org their permission for that placement.
