Briarwood Update
On March 29th , the students in grades 2nd-5th grade were provided cyber safety lessons by the State of Michigan’s Attorney General’s Office. The focus of the lessons was to remind students on how to use the internet and to be safe. The 3 key items that were part of the lessons were to:
- I KEEP TELLING my parents or a trusted adult about anything that makes me uncomfortable.
- I KEEP SAFE my personal information - ALL of it!
- I KEEP AWAY from Internet strangers.
The Lego First Robotics Club has started at Briarwood. The team is comprised of 8 fourth and fifth grade students. Each time the group meets, they work on collaborative tasks to build a robot. Once the team has built the robot, they test it out to see if it can follow the defined course for the competition.
Autism
Briarwood is has been celebrating Autism Awareness month by learning about the different ways Autism impacts the brain. On April 9th Jack's Place Foundation presented to K-2 students. The 3rd-5th grade students attended a motivational assembly from Anthony Ianucci an MSU graduate and basketball player with Autism. The message was to stop bullying and be a friend.
Pinewood Update
Pinewood also experienced an event we have not had in some time. Ms. Hyne and our K-2 students performed the musical, The Day the Crayons Quit, for their parents and family members. This musical gave our students the opportunity to showcase their musical talent, and allowed for the Pinewood Community to experience how our music program is impacting our children. Thank you to the students, teachers and Ms. Hyne for taking part in this wonderful event.
Pinewood Elementary School is currently engaged in M-STEP testing. Our 5th grade students are the first to test, with 3rd and 4th grade students beginning their testing later in April. We are very proud of the effort they are currently putting towards their assessments and encourage you to express your pride in their efforts as well.
Last, Pinewood Elementary had the opportunity to host the first, of four, Cranbrook Science Nights on April 11th. Families who came to this event experienced a Night Under the Stars, as the Cranbrook Science Institute brought their mobile planetarium to the Pinewood gymnasium. Additionally, families were provided and dinner and refreshments during the event. The near 100 participant turnout was a great way to start this three school, three event, science experience!
Westwood Update
The month of March was action packed at Westwood. Our PBIS Team and PTO, teamed up this year, to kick off March is Reading Month. Our wildcats participated in activities and events focused on literacy and a LOVE for READING!
Our students raised over $12,000 for our school. Westwood's PTO sponsored a Read-a-Thon for our Wildcats. Donations were collected from families, friends, and businesses, who supported students and their reading goals. We are so proud of our Wildcats. Donations raised for this event will go towards the support of the school's technology plan.
Students also enjoyed a fun filled week of events and activities. The PBIS Team hosted a spirit week, and students also participated in a Candyland Reading Challenge. They were rewarded with yummy treats at the end of each week. Our classroom teachers invited a host of guest readers into their classrooms. These awesome guests surprised our students throughout the month. It was exciting to see the faces of our students, as they eagerly anticipated visitors in their classrooms.
We are not finished celebrating just yet......
We have a special author visit on Friday, April 26th, to celebrate our students and their dedication to reading. Stay tuned to see who will be duct taped to the wall in this special assembly! lol
