Be a Guest Reader!
We are inviting family members in as guest readers. There are many ways you can be a guest reader; in person, virtually or by recording yourself reading a book. Classrooms will be sharing some times with you and we really hope this can work for you!
Just a reminder you must have a current CORI on file to come into the classroom. If you need to complete one please see Mrs. Crespi.
New Classroom Coming!
This program is designed for students who have been determined by the Team as meeting the eligibility criteria of Autism Spectrum Disorder, Developmental Disability, and/or Intellectual Impairment. In addition students in this program exhibit significant impairment in some or all of the following areas:
verbal communication
cognition
comprehension
adaptive daily living skills
Classroom readiness skills
ability to acquire and maintain new skills
Program Description
The program utilizes a multi-disciplinary approach to enhance communication, socialization and sensory integration. Visual symbols and augmentative communication are used throughout the classroom to assist students in understanding of classroom activities, schedules and rules. Emphasis on behavioral based methodologies (i.e. discrete trial, applied behavioral analysis, multi-sensory etc) and the development/strengthening of functional skills are integral components of the program. Low student to staff ratio maximizes the learning of new skills and reinforces appropriate behaviors. Students are integrated into the general education setting on an individual basis as determined by the team. Opportunities for inclusion should be beneficial, meaningful, and tolerated by the student. A district behavioral specialist (BCBA), Occupational therapy, Physical therapy, and Speech and Language Pathologist consult to the program regularly. These services are grid based according to the students’ individual needs and educational plans.
Instruction Methodology
Where needed, instruction can be based on the principles of applied behavior analysis to reduce behaviors and teach novel skills including but not limited to discrete trials, systematic breakdown of skills into component parts, shaping, fading, naturalistic teaching. Students in this program may benefit from intensive programming delivered using applied behavior analysis methodology. Frequency of instructional demands, classroom readiness and performance across academic skills are closely monitored and balanced with opportunities for reinforcement, leisure activities and social skills. Structure for learning opportunities including number of students, placement in the room, materials and reinforcers are continually evaluated and changes made as needed to promote progress.
Entrance Criteria:
Recent evaluation and/or classroom data provides strong evidence that Autism or Developmental related needs (verbal and non-verbal communication needs, pragmatic and social skills, sensory needs, stereotypical movements, and/or social emotional needs) are significantly interfering with the child’s ability to access the general curriculum; or the learning capacity of a young child is significantly limited, impaired, or delayed and is exhibited by difficulties in one or more of the following areas: receptive and/or expressive language; cognitive abilities; physical functioning; social, emotional, or adaptive functioning; and/or self-help skills; or the permanent capacity for performing cognitive tasks, functions, or problem solving is significantly limited or impaired and is exhibited by more than one of the following: a slower rate of learning; disorganized patterns of learning; difficulty with adaptive behavior; and/or difficulty understanding abstract concepts.
Lack of progress in current IEP placement over a period of time.
The necessity of 1:1 support in an integrated setting is a strong criteria for placement as this placement may be considered a least restrictive environment.
Decisions regarding placement in this program will be a team discussion.
If you have any questions about this new addition to our programming please do not hesitate to reach out to Mrs. Kilday.
This does not in any way change our commitment to providing meaningful, inclusive opportunities for all of our students.
