Principal's Newsletter
Dear Families,
East is back in the swing of things! We had a great week, the College and Career Committee hosted College Gear day for students and staff ( first Wednesday of each month.) This creates conversations amongst students and staff centered around colleges. All I have to say is "Boo Rowan" and "Go TCNJ!" If you attended The College of New Jersey you know the saying "Boo Rowan" because they were our biggest rival in all sports, similar to the cross town rivals we have here with TRS and TRN. It was always a fun time playing against Rowan, especially when TCNJ landed on top! If your child is interested in finding out more about colleges and careers, check out the Guidance page created by Mrs. Millard!
The Climate Committee met this week to discuss activities to continue to make a East a positive place for students and staff to attend. We strive to develop a culture where staff and students feel welcomed, excited to be here and empowered to take on challenges and initiatives.
The Math Department hosted a professional development on Thursday centered on "Questioning Techniques and the Productive Struggle." As a former Math teacher myself, I believe the productive struggle is an essential piece to the classroom. As teachers and parents, we often want to jump in and help our children to succeed prior to allowing them to "struggle" through the process. That "struggle" helps to solidify the educational concept for them and also develops grit which will help them problem solve in and out of the classroom. Check out the quick 2 minute video below for some more information about productive struggle. Often as parents we are the first one they call when they need help at home, so many of these tips can apply to your strategies working with your child on homework too!
Until next week, Go Raiders!

7 Habits of Highly Effective Teens
This month we will begin focusing on Habit # 3-Put First Things First
Prioritize the Family
Ask family members: How important is family to us? How much time did we spend last week doing family activities? How do we feel about it? Are we making family a priority in our lives?
Ask: What are the forces in society that tend to destroy the family? How can we overcome these forces?
Discuss the idea of family time and one-on-ones. Ask: How could a weekly family time be helpful to our family? How could it promote planning? teaching? problem-solving? having fun together?
Discuss making the commitment to hold a weekly family time. Work together to generate a variety of ideas for family time activities.

Heritage Club Visits Walnut Street Elementary
Last Friday, Jan 6, 2023 the Three Kings of High School East Hispanic Heritage Club visited the kids of Walnut Street Elementary. Students from the club read the book Los Reyes Magos by Lourdes M. Alvarez, held a question and answer session about the holiday, sang and danced popular songs, and colored the Three Kings. This is a holiday that is widely celebrated among Hispanic cultures. The most exciting part was when the Three Kings gave the kids holiday gifts, as is traditionally done.
Three Kings’ Day, also known as “Little Christmas” and the “Feast of Epiphany,” is a historical feast that officially concludes the Christmas season. It is celebrated every January 6th, which is 12 days after Christmas, and it is believed that on this day, the magi or the three wise men - Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar -gave baby Jesus the gifts of gold, frankincense, and myrrh.
